Description

In 1956 Mercedes Benz introduced the 220S which replaced the 220A. The 220S Mercedes-Benz model was available in a Saloon, Coupe, or convertible configuration. The interior featured leather seats and exotic material used throughout the vehicle, such as the mahogany wood trim. Power came from a 2.2-liter, SOHC inline-6 that featured twin-carburetors. Production of the 220S continued until 1959. The 'S-Class' designation of Mercedes-Benz, during its early history, usually represented the largest and most spacious luxury vehicle in the marquee's lineup. The cars were then and are now excellent highway tourers with tight fitting windows, good sound deadening, and excellent heat and fresh air systems. These systems made the cars better suited to cruising American highways than the Mercedes SL two-seaters of the time. Showing only 44,000 miles, this is a 3 owner vehicle that spent most of its life with the DuPont family in Wilmington Delaware. When purchased in 2007 the owner took the car directly to a Mercedes dealership to have the car brought back up to perfect driving condition. Prior to the work being done, the gentleman who purchased it was intending to drive the car in rally events. After putting over $10,000 into the car, he decided it was just too nice. We have receipts for this work. For the next 3 years, he drove it only around town, putting less then 1,000 miles on the car. During the major service many parts were removed, repaired or replaced including the radiator, much of the wiring, generator, new hoses, axle boots, brakes, wheel cylinders and bearings and the rear differential. The paint on the car is in fantastic condition. The car has been repainted in the last few years and still retains a great shine and luster. All the chrome and steel trim has a great shine and luster with no major imperfections. The glass is good with no scratches, cracks or chips. The weather stripping and rubber do appear to be original and does show some cracking around the windshield and vent windows. Inside, the wood looks fantastic. No cracking or imperfections to be found and the color has not faded over the years. The leather seats in the front and back are equally as nice with no cracking, splits or major spots of wear. All gauges are in good working order with no discoloration. The carpet shows no staining or tears. Under the hood, the 2.2 liter 6 cylinder runs great. Connected to the 4 speed manual gearbox, the car is a joy to drive on the highway and will keep up with today's speeds with no problems. These cars were made to cruise at highway speeds and will travel at 70 mph with no problems and are very quiet while doing so. The underside of the car is very solid as well as the trunk which includes a full size spare. The current mileage on the car shows 45,366 which is said to be original for the car but is being sold on a clean, mileage exempt Delaware title due to age. The VIN number is 140896.
