Mercedes-Benz introduced the 300 SEL in 1968 to fill the gap between the 280SE and their limousine, the 600. With a wheelbase 4" longer it met Mercedes-Benz's customer's needs for more interior space but its performance with the 2,778cc six-cylinder engine left much to be desired. Mercedes then decided to place several variations of their V-8 engine to correct their customers power demands. Thus the 108 and 109 chassis models were built by Mercedes-Benz. These vehicles were the last truly hand-built S-Class Mercedes vehicles. Starting with the 116-chassis, production was moved from a team, responsible for the entire vehicle from inception to the final touches, to an assembly line for efficiency. This allowed Mercedes to produce more vehicles in the same amount of time. The 108 and 109 vehicles were also the last vehicles with the infamous Mercedes look stacked headlamps (on NA versions), curvy hood lines, and a very large front grille. This particular 300 SEL came out of California and frequented Beverly Hills Mercedes-Benz, the attentiveness to maintenance is clear. Painted in the correct Mercedes-Benz factory color Moss Green Metallic this 300 SEL is in amazing condition. Almost no faults can be found in the paint, this car shows extremely well. The exterior chrome trim pieces are complete andin great condition; along with both front and rear dual bar bumpers. The headlights and tail lights are in very good condition with no hazing or cracks to be found. The body on this 300 SEL is very straight with no indications of damage. Taking a step inside the interior, the occupants will be treated to a very original interior that has been preserved with extreme diligence. Saddle colored leather seats, door panels, and steering wheel compliment the metallic green exterior paint with elegance. The seats are in very good condition with only very minor wear. Wood trim pieces line the interior and have remained in excellent condition, with no delamination or color fade. Tan weaved floor mats and carpeting cover the floor pans of this 300 SEL and are in remarkably good condition, with only very minor use showing. Chrome door handles and fascia pieces are in their correct place and show very well with no signs of ageing. The dashboard is in fantastic condition; the wood, original gauges and black padded top are all there and fit extremely well. In fact the optional Becker FM/AM stereo is still in place and has aged extremely well. Also the fully functional factory air conditioning controls are in great condition, as well as, the vents. In the boot the original green and yellow weaved mat is in place and shows very minor signs of use. A full-size spare and original canvas tool-kit are still in their factory positions. Mechanically this Mercedes-Benz 300 SEL is very sound; this car is capable of being driven daily if the owner desired. Powered by the very reliable single overhead camshaft M116 V8 engine, which has a displacement of 4.5 liters and produced 225 hp and 211 lb-ft. This engine also features Boschs relatively newat that timeJetronic fuel injection system which greatly increased reliability. The 109 chassis came standard with air-suspension, which provided a vastly improved ride quality over the 108s coil springs. Dual wishbone with a sway bar compliments the front air suspension, while the rear air suspension is mated with a swing arm. A 4-speed automatic transmission is mated to the 4.5L engine and is very smooth with seamless shifts. Stopping this big body Mercedes are disc brakes in all four original color matched wheels.
