1962 Ford Thunderbird Numbers matching Factory A/C Rare original side skirts 390 V-8 making 300hp Convertible top in great condition Red vinyl seats in great condition MotoeXotica is pleased to offer this 1962 Ford Thunderbird. Ford never intended their Thunderbird to compete with the other 2 door coupes American manufactures were offering, such as the especially the Chevrolet Corvette. Ford, instead, set out to create an entirely new automobile market segment; the cleverly named the personal car segment. In which the goal was to attract the newly wealthy middle-class Americans into a stylish sports coupe for no purpose other than the pleasure of driving. With 1961 being the start to the third generation Thunderbird, Ford revised and upgraded several options on their model. An all-new 390 V-8 making more than adequate 300hp was mated with their smooth 3-speed Cruise-O-Matic transmission. Commonly referred to as bullet birds; Fords styling department created an automobile with a presence that was lacking in cars of that era. To continue the sleek exterior styling the drivers cockpit was shaped to wraparound driver and passenger, then continuing its lines into the door panels. To add function and style the show piece was the swinging steering wheel that allowed the driver (mostly women) to exit the car without a mishap. This 1962 Thunderbird is an excellent example of a tastefully restored numbers matching Rangoon Red Thunderbird. The white convertible top fold into the trunk space extremely well and shows very little signs of stress or age. Continuing the color scheme the red vinyl interior seats are in great condition, as well as the door panels and dash board. The swinging steering wheel is still serves it function, as well as, it is unique. A rare factory option of A/C was equipped in the original purchase as well as power steering and brakes. Currently the A/C switches and engine temperature gauge do not function properly. The Cruise-O-Matic transmission shifts extremely smooth and complements the power of the 390 V-8 very well. The car still retains the rare factory fender side skirts that are in good condition as well as in the correct color. With minor scratches that very common on removable side skirts. Side skirts look excellent help complete the car by contrasting against the relatively new white wall tires. The chrome finishing in and around the car are in moderate condition; with the bumpers showing signs of the cars age. Although there is no paper trail to confirm our suspicions of an recently complete restoration, we do believe it to be true. Unfortunately we were unable to find receipts or pictures that would confirm this. However the pictures show clearly that restoration work has been completed at some point in this cars history. The previous owner purchased the car in 2005 and has spent the last 10 years of stewardship of an owner that truly cared about the car. The owner loaned the car to a local Ford dealership's showroom floor for the final 5 years of their ownership. Our Thunderbird makes for a perfect weekend cruiser or taking a step back into the past.
