1989 Aston Martin Lagonda

SOLD

Description

With its sharp creases and folds, Aston Martin's Lagonda takes angular to a higher plane than General Motors' E-Bodies (Riviera, Eldorado and Toronado) between 1979 and 1985. This car has a presence matched by few other vehicles.

This is one of only 72 left-hand drive Series 4 Lagondas built and the previous owner bought it in 2008. It is the msot sought after of the Lagonda series with its prominent headlights.

The Lagonda—which cost more than a Ferrari Testarossa when new—was delivered new through Palm Beach Motorcars to James S. Mush of Singer Island, Florida on December 21, 1989. The luxurious Aston saloon split time between Florida and Missouri, covering under 500 miles a year. In 2005, Dr. Ross Bederman in Long Island, New York acquired the car for a further three years. The previous owner, His Highness Sheikh Nasser Mohammed Al-Ahmed Al-Sabah, of Kuwait, acquired the car February 19, 2008. The car was in his personal collection for nearly 15 years before returning stateside where acquired the car.

Dressed in Cannock Black, the car's paint and trim are in overall very good order and its bodywork is straight and solid. The engine bay is in satisfactory condition while the trunk looks good. There is a full-sized spare tire mounted vertically in the forward end of the bay. One novel feature is access to the fuel filler door – one must open the trunk lid first. The body-colored bumpers fit tightly to the body.

This sleek machine rolls on Avon Turbospeed CR27 radials, size 255/60ZR16 at all four corners. Each one is mounted to a factory alloy wheel. The tires and wheels are all in very good order. This car comes with four-wheel independent suspension.

In the Lagonda, Aston's well-proven 5.3-liter V-8 employed a quartet of twin-choke Weber 42DCNF carburetors. Backing the motor is a Chrysler TorqueFlite three-speed automatic gearbox was the standard transmission. More than 17 feet long, six feet wide and weighing two tons, the Lagonda was an imposing sight from any angle, yet despite its bulk proved quite capable. Driver convenience features include air-conditioning, power steering, power four-wheel disc brakes, sunroof, cruise control, power windows, power locks and power sideview mirrors.

According to Aston Martin Lagonda Limited, 106 Lagonda Series 4 models were built, the right/left-hand drive split being 34/72. From the final series of production and penultimate year the model was imported to North America, this Lagonda was completed in the fall of 1989.

Aston Martin factory records confirm the car's interior was finished in Magnolia Connolly Leather hides with black piping with a black dashboard and beige Wilton Wool carpets. Fitted with a mid-2000s JVC AM/FM/CD head unit and a hardwired and connected mount for your obsolete Motorola StarTac flip phone, few miles have been added to the Lagonda since its purchase 15 years ago. We did remove the stance gas and did a general tune up on the car to get it running well. A/C blows but not cold.

This luxo-cruiser from the future we were promised is complete with a clean Auto Check.

Aston Martin's periodic revival of the Lagonda name saw it applied to a stretched, four-door with a V-8 engine in the mid-1970s; a mere handful of these 'Series 1' cars were constructed.

When the concept re-emerged as an entirely new product type, it was the sensation of the 1976 London Motor Show. Clothed in striking 'razor edge' bodywork designed by William Towns - the man responsible for the DBS - the new Lagonda saloon, designated 'Series 2', used the same long-wheelbase V-8 chassis as its immediate predecessor, while breaking new ground in terms of digital LCD instrumentation and touch-button switch gear.

Problems with this advanced concept would delay production until April 1978, by which time a simplified arrangement had been adopted. The interior though, was every bit as luxurious as the exterior was futuristic, featuring selected Connolly Leather hides, Wilton Wool carpeting and walnut veneer, all hand-finished by skilled craftsmen in the best Aston Martin tradition.

Production got into its stride towards the end of 1978, with one car per week being completed at the Newport Pagnell factory. The Lagonda was face-lifted in 1987 as the Series 4, acquiring a slightly softer, less hard-edged look and continued in production until May 1990 by which time a total of 638 had been built. Even today, almost 30 years after its sensational debut, there are few cars that can match the visual presence of the Aston Martin Lagonda.

Competition to this Aston Martin in 1989 included Audi's 200, Excalibur's Series V Touring Sedan, Jaguar's Sovereign, Mercedes-Benz's 560 SEL and Rolls-Royce's Silver Spirit and Silver Spur sedans.
