Description

We at MotoeXotica Classic Cars often ask prospective buyers to re-live their youth through classic cars. What about when the vehicle has a second life? This truck spent most all of its life in Arizona current consignor is from Texas. Comes with clean AutoCheck report.

Built at Toyota's Tahara, Aichi, Japan factory, this example is finished in Dark Gray Metallic (code 138) with a black, removable fiberglass hardtop with new or refinished exterior trim with the well-known SR5 trim package. The bodywork is straight and solid, the chrome front and body-colored rear bumpers fit tightly to the body and look fantastic. The engine bay is extremely tidy, the Super Start battery appears new and the cargo area is clean and neat.

This 4Runner has newer General Grabber Light Truck tires, size 30x9.50-15 at every corner. Each tire is mounted on an original aluminum wheel. The wheels are in very good order, too.

Under the hood is Toyota's 2.4L four-cylinder engine with electronic fuel injection (code 22R-E). This engine has been rebuilt, along with the five-speed manual transmission (code 2W56). Driver convenience features include air-conditioning, sunroof, power rack-and-pinion steering and power disc brakes. Oil pressure gauge is inop. There is a rear defroster, rear window washer and wiper, too.

Inside, there is new upholstery and new carpeting that matches the original interior (code FL11). The seats are in excellent condition, while the carpeting and headliner are in very good order. Only the two-spoke steering wheel shows any sign of the vehicle's age. The dashboard and inner door panels are in fine form. The instrument panel has a full array of gauges, the center console and floor-mounted shifter are in very good order. A factory AM/FM stereo with a CD player completes the interior.

The first generation is nearly mechanically identical to the Toyota Hilux. All first generation 4Runners had two doors and were indistinguishable from the pickups from the dashboard forward. Nearly all changes were to the latter half of the body; because the rear springs were not upgraded to bear the additional weight from the rear seats and fiberglass top, these early models tended to suffer from a sagging rear suspension.

In North America, they were sold from the 1984½ model year from May 1984. For this first year (March to July 1984 production), all models were equipped with black or white fiberglass tops. An SR5 trim package was offered that upgraded the interior: additional gauges, better fabrics, and a rear seat were standard with the package.

Nineteen eighty-five saw the arrival of the electronically fuel-injected 2.4 L 22R-E (and 22R-EC with California emissions controls) inline four-cylinder engine. Additionally, rear seats were available in all 1985 4Runner trim levels, not just the more upscale SR5.

In 1986, the Surf/4Runner underwent a major front suspension design change as it was changed from a solid front axle to the Hi-Trac independent front suspension. Track width was also increased by three inches. These changes made the trucks more comfortable on-road, and improved stability and handling. The new suspension also increased the space in the engine compartment (necessary to fit larger engines, such as the V6 introduced in 1987) but arguably decreased the truck's off-road capabilities. The North American specification Toyota Pickup also adopted this new suspension, but the regular Hilux for other markets at this point retained the more rugged and capable, if less refined, solid axle configuration. With the 1986 update, the Surf/4Runner grille changed from the three-segment type to the two-segment grille. Tops were color-matched on blue, red and some gold models, while other body colors were still sold with black or white tops.

Competition to this 4Runner in 1987 includes Chevrolet's S-10 Blazer, Ford's Bronco II, GMC's S-15 Jimmy, Jeep's Cherokee, Mitsubishi's Montero and Nissan's Pathfinder.

Whether you drove one of these while in high school, college or whether you'd like to find out if they're really as cool and fun as your dad or uncle told you, you should get to MotoeXotica Classic Cars to check this restored 4Runner out before someone else drives it home.
