1959 Volkswagen Transporter Single-cab Pickup

You have probably seen Volkswagen Microbuses before but did you know they made pickup truck variants, too? We have an early single-cab variant here at MotoeXotica Classic Cars. This might make for a great advertising opportunity for the right small business and a hit at any car show. This rarely seen single-cab went through a comprehensive restoration prior to our purchase.

Made in January 1959 at its Hanover, West Germany factory, this example is finished in gray (code L345) and overall, the paint and trim are in very good order. The split windshield panels flip out and the side glass slides back and forth. There are Hella headlights up front. The bodywork is straight and solid, the chrome bumpers look good and fit tightly to the body, the engine bay is very tidy and the cargo bed is enhanced with a metal keg from New Belgium Brewing Company out of Fort Collins, Colorado. There is a metal framework in place for the canvas-colored canopy with a newer canvas that rolls up on all 3 sides. There is also a full-sized spare tire in the bed and original, working semaphore turn signals. (Spare set of semaphores included)

This truck rolls on Pirelli P4s at every corner, size 195/60R15. Each one is mounted on a steel wheel and topped by a factory moon wheel cover, painted to match the body color. The wheels and tires are all in good condition.

Out back is a 1.2L flat, air-cooled, dual-port four-cylinder engine and breathing via a single exhaust. Backing the motor is a big-box, three-speed manual transmission.

Inside, the red vinyl bench seat with white trim provides great contrast to the exterior and looks fantastic. The red inner door liners also contrast well with the gray, metal dashboard. The black headliner looks good. There's a two-spoke steering wheel in a bus-like configuration, setting off the VDO gauges. While the speedo works the odo is inop. A floor-mounted shifter and a factory AM radio complete the interior.

The first generation of the Volkswagen Type 2 with the split windshield, informally called the Microbus, Splitscreen or Splittie among modern fans, was produced from March 8, 1950 through the end of the 1967 model year.

From 1950 to 1956, the T1 (not called that at the time) was built in Wolfsburg; from 1956, it was built at the completely new Transporter factory in Hanover, West Germany. Like the Beetle, the first Transporters used the 1100 Volkswagen air-cooled flat four-cylinder 'boxer' engine mounted in the rear. This was upgraded to the 1200 in 1953.

Competition to this Splittie in 1959 were the small vans Chevrolet, Dodge, Ford and GMC that launched in 1960, particularly the single-cab models from Dodge and Ford.
