1992 Chevrolet Corvette Convertible

Description

By 1992, the fourth-generation of Chevrolet's Corvette was in its ninth model year. Like all Corvettes made since mid-1981, this example was made in General Motors' factory in Bowling Green, Kentucky.

Dressed in yellow (code 35), the car's paint and trim are in overall excellent condition. The bodywork is straight and solid and the engine bay is tidy. Even the body-colored bumpers fit tightly to the body. For those who don't know, the car's headlights revolve when opened, they don't simply pop-up.

Rolling on Michelin Pilot Sport all-season radials, size 27540ZR17 at all four corners, each tire is mounted to a factory “sawblade” style alloy wheel. The wheels and tires are all in very good condition.

Under the forward-hinged hood is a 350 CID V-8 engine that was new for 1992. Rated at a hearty 300 horsepower with 300 pounds-feet of torque, the LT-1 engine's improved performance was the result of a number of improvements and refinements to the existing 5.7-liter V-8. Among these improvements was the introduction of computer-controlled engine timing, a new low-restriction exhaust system that utilized two catalytic converters and oxygen sensors (one for each cylinder bank), a new camshaft profile, a higher compression ratio, 10.5:1, free-flow cylinder heads and a revised multiport fuel-injection system. Cast iron exhaust manifolds were also introduced, replacing the previously used stainless-steel ones. This, along with other minor modifications, resulted in the LT-1 engine weighing 21 pounds more than its predecessor. To its credit, however, this engine was capable of providing impressive performance numbers even while operating on low octane gasoline.

The LT-1 was also the first powerplant to utilize “reverse flow cooling,” a process in which the engine routed coolant directly to the cylinder heads, rather than sending through the engine block first. The primary purpose of this revised cooling process was to allow higher bore temperatures and reduced ring friction, while also providing better cooling at key points.

Beyond the engine, the 1992 Corvettes benefited from a new standard traction-control system called Acceleration Slip Regulation which was developed in conjunction with Germany's Bosch company. Backing the motor is a four-speed automatic transmission (code 700R4). Driver convenience features include air-conditioning, power rack-and-pinion steering, power four-wheel disc brakes, cruise control, power windows, power locks, power sideview mirrors, power seats and rear defroster.

Safety equipment included dual front airbags, anti-lock brakes and traction control.

Inside, the white bucket seats are in very good order, as is the contrasting black carpeting. A four-spoke steering faces the driver and frames the dashboard with its combination of analog and digital gauges. The black dash and black-and-white inner door panels are all in very good order. The center console looks good, as does the gear shifter. A Delco-Bose AM/FM stereo with CD player rounds out the interior.

During the course of the 1992 production run, the one-millionth Corvette rolled off the Bowling Green assembly line.

Convertible competition in 1992 included Acura NSX, Aston Martin's Virage, Jaguar's XJS, Mercedes-Benz's 500 SL, Nissan's 300ZX and Porsche's 911.
