1970 International Scout 800A Aristocrat

Feeling aristocratic? International-Harvester made a vehicle for that: the Scout 800A Aristocrat. Two versions before the popular Scout II came out, there was the International Scout 800A. This example was made in May 1969 in International's Fort Wayne, Indiana factory (VIN code G).

This model has undergone an older, frame-off restoration and retains the factory Dark blue over silver exterior that all Aristocrats came dressed in. The truck's paint and trim are in overall very good order and the bodywork is straight and solid. The cargo area is in similar condition. The engine bay is very tidy and the battery appears new. The chrome and silver corrugated metal bumpers fit tightly to the body.

This truck rolls on new Goodyear Wranglers, size 235/75R15 at all four corners with 1023 date codes. Each one is mounted to a factory wheel, with manual locking front hubs. There is four-wheel drive with a Dana 20 transfer case, a Dana 30 front axle, a Dana 44 rear axle with Power-Lok limited-slip differential and a 3.73:1 rear end. It has dual gas tanks.

Under the hood is an upgraded 304 CID V-8 engine with a recently rebuilt Holley two-barrel carburetor. The engine has new points and a condenser. There is also a new brake master cylinder. The motor is married to a Borg-Warner T-18 four-speed manual transmission. Driver convenience features include aftermarket air-conditioning. A/C compressor does not engage.

Inside, the blue vinyl front bucket seats and rear bench seat are in decent shape. There are new floor mats in place, front and rear, a two-spoke steering wheel frames a full array of Auto Meter gauges fitted in the dashboard. The dark blue metal dashboard and matching inner door panels are in satisfactory shape and include a set of aftermarket gauges. Tach is inop. A floor shift and a tub of extras which includes the original gauge bezel, gauges and original speedometer, spare headlights and tail light lens and original brake master cylinder.

The 800A replaced the 800 during November 1968. Improvements included more creature-comfort options, a slightly different front-end treatment, drivetrain upgrades (heavier rear axle and quieter Dana 20 transfer case), and the options of a 196 CID four-cylinder, 232 CID six-cylinder, 266 V-8 or 304 V-8. The inline-six was only offered for a short period in early 1969. The 800A's grille was in three segments: the center grill and two matte-black headlight bezels. The Aristocrat was the final version of the original-bodied Scout. These trucks had a blue, vinyl interior, were painted blue and silver and had a chrome roof rack; four-wheel drive was standard for most models.

Competition to this Scout in 1970 included Chevrolet's new K5 Blazer, Ford's Bronco, GMC's new K5 Jimmy and Jeep's Wagoneer.
