1952 Cadillac Fleetwood Sixty-Special Sedan

Still wearing its P-38-inspired tailfins that were all the rage four years earlier, this 1952 Cadillac Fleetwood Sedan is a great overall restored condition by the former owner. After his passing his daughter inherited the car. Her father always loved and card for this Fleetwood and had the car restored with new paint and upholstery and chrome which shows nicely.

This example was built in General Motors' Detroit, Michigan assembly and was bought on September 26, 1952 by an Everett B. and his wife of Lebanon, Missouri. They traded in a 1940s Buick Century Sedan for the Cadillac, fulfilling chairman Alfred Sloan's wish of moving customers upmarket with each new GM purchase.

Finished in black, (code 1), the car's newer paint and trim are in overall very good order, the bodywork is straight and solid, the chrome bumpers and bumper guards fit tightly to the body and the engine bay is tidy.

This big Caddy rolls on white stripe bias-ply tires, size 235/75R15 at all four corners. Each tire is mounted on a steel wheel, topped with a factory wheel cover. The four has four-wheel drum brakes while its wheels and tires are all in good, original order.

Under the big car's counterbalanced hood is a 331 CID OHV V-8 engine. Backing the motor is a Hydramatic four-speed automatic transmission (code H) and a 3.36:1 rear end. Driver convenience features include power windows, E-Z Eye Glass (code E) and fog lights.

Inside, the car received a new set of upholstery in July 2003, matching to the factory originals – Light Gray Plain Broadcloth over Dark Gray Plain Broadcloth (code 61). The seats (there's a center fold-down armrest in back) are in overall very good order, as is the complimentary black carpet. A gray headliner arcs over the driver's and any passengers' heads. A two-spoke steering wheel faces the driver while the gray dashboard and inner door panels echo the condition of the seats. A column-mounted shifter and a factory AM radio complete the interior.

Cadillac celebrated its Golden Anniversary in 1952. Changes were minimal – and mostly in back where the reverse lamps were now integral with the fin-mounted tail lamps, and the “Fleetwood” script returned to the trunk lid. In addition, the rear exhaust outlets were now in the form of two wide horizontal slots on the outer edges of the rear bumper. Also new for 1952 were winged crest emblems, mounted on the grille extensions below the headlights. With the addition of a down-draft carburetor, the 331 CID engine. A revised automatic transmission was standard on Sixty Special, while power steering was offered at extra cost. Sales fell to 16,110 units, while the price and weight both rose. Cadillac won Motor Trend's “Car of the Year” again in 1952.

Competition to this Cadillac in 1952 included Buick's Series 70 Roadmaster Riviera Sedan, Cadillac's own Series Sixty-Two Sedan, Chrysler's Imperial Sedan and New Yorker, Hudson's Commodore Eight, Mercury's Monterey and Packard's 300.

Documentation includes the original car order, 1949-1970 Cadillac Parts and Supply Catalog, 2001 edition; copies of original, handwritten repair slips from July 31, 1974 to September 10, 1990; copies of various modern receipts and invoices and spare key(s).
