1966 Ford Galaxie

SOLD

Description

Are you a Ford Fan seeking your next project? We have here at MotoeXotica Classic Cars in the 1966 Ford Galaxie 500 7-Liter Hardtop. It could use some TLC and some elbow grease to rehabilitate to your taste.

We are selling the car for a local consignor who inherited the car from her dad in 2002, who owned the car several decades. After she got the car she has a local California Speed Shop rebuild the motor at a cost of nearly $10K. Sorry receipts cannot be found. She moved back to ST. Louis in 2002 and had the car delivered to Shaffer Auto Repair in Bellville, IL where they went through the car in preparation for the sale.

Built on October 19, 1965 in Ford's Los Angeles, California factory (VIN code J) and originally sold in the Los Angeles, California service area (DSO code 71), this Ford 7-Liter is a rare example of Ford's Quietest Quick Car in 1966.

Finished in Springtime Yellow (code 8), the car's paint and trim are in decent condition. The bodywork is straight and solid and the chrome bumpers fit tightly to the car's body. The top was repainted about 5-8 years ago as it was sun faded. The rest of the car is solid and in need of a repaint.

This full-size Ford rolls on Uniroyal Tiger Paw white stripe radials, size 215/70R15 at all four corners. Each tire is mounted on a steel wheel topped with a factory wheel cover. The wheels and tires are all in good, original order.

Under the hood is a rebuilt 428 CID V-8 engine (code Q) and four-barrel carburetor from Ford's Thunderbird. Backing this motor is a C-6 three-speed automatic transmission (code 4) with 3.25:1 gearing (code 4) in a 9 and 3/8-inch rear end. Driver convenience features include power windows, power front seats and a driver's side remote mirror.

Inside, the black carpet with Parchment vinyl upholstery (code S6) is in satisfactory order, as is the carpet. There's a three-spoke woodgrain “rim-blow” steering wheel. Right front window binds and both rear windows are inop. No head liner present. The inner door panels and dashboard look okay, as do the center console and console-mounted shift lever. A factory AM radio completes the interior.

Suspension on the 1965 models was redesigned. Replacing the former leaf-spring rear suspension was a new three-link system, with coil springs. The current front suspension appears original has some "squeaks" and clatter. Interiors featured a new instrument panel, as well as two-way key vehicle access: the introduction of two keys was for valet parking, where the rounded head key would only open the trunk or locked glove compartment, while the squared head key would only unlock the doors and the ignition.

A new model was introduced for 1966; the Galaxie 500 7-Litre, fitted with a new engine, the 345 hp 428 CID Thunderbird V-8. This engine was also available on the Ford Thunderbird and the Mercury S-55. The police versions received a version of the 428 known as the 'Police Interceptor' as police cars. Safety regulations for 1966 required seat belts front and rear on all new cars sold domestically.

Competition to this Galaxie in 1966 included Chevrolet's Impala and Plymouth's Belvedere.

If you're looking for a father-son project or your latest Blue Oval workbench filler, check out this 1966 Ford Galaxie 7-Liter Hardtop. It is a rare survivor from a decade when Ford consistently ranked in the top three in sales.
