1970 Volkswagen Karmann Ghia

The 2+2 Beetle became a hit when it after debuted in the mid-1950s and continued to sell well for Volkswagen for another 20 years. This immaculate Ghia has resided with the same owner since 1983 and was always garaged. It came equipped with a rarely seen VW air-conditioning unit. Still on MO title from 1983 with mileage then at 103,xxx.

This example was made in Osnabruck, West Germany in March 1970. Karmann Ghias were made differently than Beetles. In contrast to the Beetle's machine-welded body with bolt-on fenders, the Karmann Ghia's body panels were butt-welded, hand-shaped and smoothed with English pewter in a time-consuming process commensurate with higher-end manufacturers, resulting in the Karmann Ghia's higher price.

Dressed in Bahia Red (code L30E), the car's paint and trim are in overall excellent order. The bodywork is straight and solid, the cargo area is clean and the engine bay is extremely tidy. The chrome bumpers are in excellent condition. A full-sized spare tire and wheel are also in the front trunk.

This lowlight rolls on older white strip, bias-play tires, size 6.00-15L, at all four corners. Each tire is mounted on steel wheels topped with full factory wheel covers. The wheel covers are in very good condition while the tires are all in good, original order.

In back is a 1.6L flat, air-cooled four-cylinder engine buttoned to a four-speed manual transmission. Driver convenience features include factory air-conditioning and front disc brakes.

Inside, the black vinyl interior contrasts nicely with the red exterior. The front buckets and rear bench seats are all in very good order, as is the matching carpet and the netural-shaded headliner. A two-spoke steering wheel faces the driver while the black-over-red dash and inner door liners are in very good shape. The dash has its original VDO gauges. The center console and floor-mounted shifter finish out the interior along an aftermarket AM/FM stereo with a cassette deck.

The Volkswagen Karmann Ghia is a sports car marketed in 2+2 coupe (1955–1974) and 2+2 convertible (1957–1974) body styles by Volkswagen. Internally designated the Type 14, the Karmann Ghia combined the chassis and mechanicals of the Type 1 (Beetle) with styling by Italy's Carrozzeria Ghia and hand-built bodywork by German coachbuilding house Karmann.

In 1970, larger taillights integrated the reversing lights and larger wrap-around turn signals. Still larger and wider taillights increased side visibility.

Competition in 1970 included AMC's Gremlin, Chevrolet's Corvair and new-for-'71 Vega, Datsun's 1200, Dodge's captive import Colt, Ford's new-for-'71 Pinto and Toyota's Corolla.
