2008 Chevrolet Corvette

After five generations of Chevrolet's halo car, the sixth generation car launched in 2005. Sixth-generation Corvettes are the first ones to feature exposed headlights since 1962. This model, like all Corvettes since mid-1981, was made in General Motors' Bowling Green, Kentucky factory. This example was made in September 2007.  This fine C6 is owned by a local retired executive who has owned the car since 2017 and always garaged.

This example is dressed in striking Velocity Yellow (code 45). Nine percent of all Corvettes made in 2008 came finished in this color. The car's paint and trim are in overall excellent order. The bodywork is straight and sold, the engine bay is extremely tidy and the cargo area looks great. The car's body-colored bumpers fit tightly to the body and the AC Delco battery is clean.  He added several under hood upgrades and a removable rear split window option.

The C6 brought additional changes in the quest for reduced weight, not the least of which was the elimination of the Corvette's trademark retractable headlamps in favor of simpler, lighter-weight fixed units. The plastic-intensive sheet-molded compound (SMC) body panels remained, although surprisingly, the rear fenders are made of conventional steel. 

This 'Vette rolls on Goodyear Eagle Exhilarate radials, size 245/40ZR18 in front and size 285/35ZR19 in back. Each tire is mounted on a factory, five-spoke alloy wheel with body-color brake calipers. The wheels and tires are all in very good condition. There are 22-square-feet of cargo space behind the bucket seats and the car has an 18-gallon fuel tank. 

Under that forward-hinged hood is GM's 6.2L OHV 16-valve V-8 engine (code LS-3) with sequential fuel injection and wearing a chrome dress-up kit. There's even a matching chrome shield on the hood's underside bearing a giant version of the Corvette's logo. This engine generates 430 horsepower and 424 lbs-ft of torque and has a 11:1 compression ratio. Backing this motor is a six-speed automatic transmission (code 6L80) and a 2.56:1 rear end. The transmission features stainless-steel shift paddles on the steering wheel. 

Driver convenience features include electronic climate control, power rack-and-pinion steering, power four-wheel disc brakes, a Heads-up Display (HUD), cruise control, power windows, power locks, power sideview mirrors, power seats and a power antenna. There's also a removable roof panel, fold-in sideview mirrors and in back is a vertical, body-color rear window divider that harks back to the 1963 Corvette, the original split-window coupe.  

Safety equipment includes dual front-impact air bags, anti-lock brakes, side-impact air bags, stability control and a factory security system.   

Inside is an Ebony leather interior (code 193) Sixty-four percent of all Corvettes made in 2008 came in this interior color. Someone has customized specific pieces of the interior – the center armrest, the shift bag that surrounds the shift lever and the word “Corvette” is embossed above the glovebox – all in yellow. The bucket seats look great, as does the matching carpet and headliner. The factory three-spoke steering wheel faces the driver with the aforementioned paddles and satellite controls for the stereo and cruise control. The inner door panels and dashboard look fine with its heads-up display. A center console and factory infotainment system round out the interior.  

In 2005, the sixth-generation Corvette featured new bodywork with exposed headlamps, revised suspension geometry, a larger passenger compartment, a larger 364 CID (6.0L) V-8 engine and a higher level of refinement. The Corvette C6's suspension consisted of independent unequal-length double wishbones with transverse fiberglass mono-leaf springs and optional magnetorheological dampers. 

Beginning with the 2008 model year, the Corvette received a new engine, the LS3. With displacement increased to 376 CID or 6.2L; power increased to 430 horsepower at 6,500 rpm and 424 lbs⋅ft of torque at 4,600 rpm or 436 horsepower and 428 lbs⋅ft with the optional vacuum actuated valve exhaust. The automatic model was set up for quicker shifts and (according to Chevrolet) and accelerated from 0 to 60 mph in 4.0 seconds, faster than any other production automatic Corvette model. From 2008 onward, the steering was revised for improved feel and the wheels were updated to a new five-spoke design. 

Competition to this Corvette in 2008 included Aston Martin's DB9, Audi's R8, BMW's M6 Coupe, Ferrari's F430 Berlinetta, Jaguar's XKR Coupe, Maserati's Granturismo, Mercedes-Benz CLK 63 AMG, Nissan's GTR, Porsche's 911 Turbo Coupe and Saleen's S281 Supercharged.
