1965 CHEVROLET CORVETTE COUPE

Three model years in, the biggest feature on Chevrolet's Corvette for 1965 was four-wheel disc brakes. The groundbreaking and iconic second-generation Corvette completed the car's transformation from boulevard cruiser to bonafide sports car. Like every other Corvette from 1954 until mid-1981, this Corvette was made in General Motors' St. Louis, Missouri factory (VIN code S). This car left the assembly line on November 10, 1964. We are selling the car for a local client who is looking to get a new C8.

Dressed in Milano Maroon (code MM), the car's paint and trim are in overall excellent order. The bodywork is straight and solid, the chrome bumpers fit tightly to the body, the engine bay is very tidy and the cargo area behind the bucket seats is in very good order. 

Shod in BFGoodrich Silvertown yellow line radials, size 205/75R15 at all four corners, each tire is mounted to a factory alloy wheel with center spinners. The tires and wheels are all in very good order. 

Under that forward-hinged hood is a 327 CID Turbo-Fire V-8 engine, reportedly with matching numbers, and breathing via dual exhausts. Backing this motor is a Turbo Hydramatic 350 three-speed automatic transmission. Driver convenience features include air-conditioning(currently engages, but not cold), power steering, power windows and a power antenna. 

Inside, the car's Saddle Leather interior (code 421) is in overall great condition, including the low-back bucket seats, matching carpet and headliner. The three-spoke steering wheel has a teak wood rim. The inner door panels and “dual cockpit” dashboard look great. The center console, shift lever and a custom AM/FM stereo with cassette deck complete the interior. 

For its third season, the 1965 Corvette Sting Ray further cleaned up style-wise and was muscled up with the addition of an all-new braking system and larger power plants. Styling alterations were subtle, confined to a smoothed-out hood now devoid of scoop indentations, a trio of working vertical exhaust vents in the front fenders that replaced the previous nonfunctional horizontal “speedlines,” restyled wheel covers and rocker-panel moldings and minor interior trim revisions.  

Four-wheel disc brakes were also introduced in 1965. The brakes had a four-piston design with two-piece calipers and cooling fins for the rotors. Pads were in frequent contact with the rotors, but the resulting drag was negligible and did not affect fuel economy. Further, the light touching kept the rotors clean and did not diminish pad life, which was, in fact, quite high: a projected 57,000 miles for the front brakes and about twice that distance for the rear binders. Total swept area for the new system was 461-square-inches, a notable advance on the 328-square-inches of the previous all-drum system. Per pending federal regulation, there was also a dual master cylinder with separate fluid reservoirs (only on models with power brakes for 1965) for the front and rear lines. Road testers rightly applauded the all-disc brakes. Testers found that repeated stops from 100 mph produced no deterioration in braking efficiency, and even the most sudden stops were rock-stable. Also available were alloy spinner rims.
