1943 Ford 1.5-ton Flatbed 1943 Ford 1.5-ton Flatbed Truck

SOLD

Description

Purchased originally to fight fires in and around Montrose, Colorado during the 1950s, this 1943 Ford 1.5-ton truck has since become a flatbed and it has gained a lot of patina on the outside.

While 1943 was the core of World War II and civilian purchases were forbidden, Ford made some “civilian” models available to state and local government agencies, including emergency services. That's how this truck began its life before moving to Colorado. Note that many of the trim pieces that would normally be chrome are either painted or colored plastic instead.

The exterior resembles a tie-dyed T-shirt – mostly black with splotches of red and yellow from its former life as a fire vehicle. The bodywork is straight; the flatbed portion is wooden with metal strips screwed in perpendicularly.

The blackwall bias-ply tires ride on black wheels and there is a dual axle in the rear. The wheels have been sandblasted and powder-coated.

Under the hood is a 239 CID Flathead V-8 engine backed by a four-speed manual transmission. The engine has the following new parts - carburetor, water pump, battery and spark plugs.

Inside is a black interior that is in overall satisfactory order. The full bench seat looks good, there are floor mats instead of carpet, the headliner is okay, the four-spoke steering wheel is big and the black painted inner door panels are average. The speedo/odometer/amp gauges are inop. The period-40s dash has a full array of ancillary gauges. A floor-mounted shifter rounds out the sparse interior.

For the eccentric collector, the truck collector or someone who wants a stand-out vehicle for their small business, this Ford Flatbed would fit the bill.
