Description

Need a new father-son car project? Are you a F-body fan? We have a 1968 Chevrolet Camaro Coupe at MotoeXotica Classic Cars. This car is a local consignment where the restoration was started, but not completed. It is a nice platform to either a custom build or go back to stock finish. It is in need of work.

Originally made during the fifth week of July 1968 at General Motors' Norwood, Ohio factory, the black paint and trim are in overall satisfactory order, the glass panels are in mediocre order, the engine bay is tidy while the bodywork is in good order. The chrome bumpers are in very good order. The car runs, but on a bottle-feed. The filter neck to tank is missing with some damage to rear end as photoed.

The hood has been modified with a reverse-air intake and the passenger side windshield wiper is missing.

This Camaro rolls on radials, size 205/60R15 in front and 215/70R15 in rear. Three of the four tires are mounted on factory turbine wheels that are in good condition but show age.

Under the hood is a 350 CID V-8 engine with Holley heads and an Accel distributor. The engine is linked to four-speed manual transmission. This Camaro has power brakes.

The black interior is in overall satisfactory shape – seats, carpet and headliner. The center console and shifter need even more TLC.

The styling of the 1968 Camaro was very similar to the 1967 design. With the introduction of Astro Ventilation, a fresh-air-inlet system, the side vent windows were deleted. Side marker lights were added on the front and rear fenders as part of safety requirements for all 1968 vehicles. It also had a more pointed front grille and divided rear taillights. The front running lights (on non-RS models) were also changed from circular to oval. The big-block SS models received chrome hood inserts that imitated velocity stacks and low-gloss black rear taillight panel.

The rear shock absorber mounting was staggered to resolve wheel hop issues and higher performance models received multi-leaf rear springs instead of single-leaf units.

Competition to this Camaro in 1968 included American Motors' Javelin, Dodge's Challenger, Ford's Mustang, Mercury's Capri, Plymouth's Barracuda and Pontiac's Firebird.

If you are after a project in need of elbow grease, this '68 Camaro offers all that and more. Which direction will you take it – back to showroom new or modified in a new way? Stop at MotoeXotica Classic Cars to take a look at what you might be working with today!
