Nineteen fifty-three was the first year of the F-100 and the last year you could get a Flathead in a Ford pickup. The new 53 F-100 was uniquely styled with a slant cab window, fat fenders and larger cab space than the F-1. It was also the 50th Anniversary of the Ford pickup. This example was made in Fords Detroit Truck factory (code H). Finished in Vermilion Red (code N) with white trim, the paint is in overall excellent order. The chrome shows some patina and pitting. The bodywork is straight and solid. The cargo bed is in overall satisfactory condition with older wood. The chrome bumpers are in fantastic shape. This truck rolls on American Classic tires, size 7.00-15 light truck tires. Each tire is mounted to a steel wheel topped with a factory wheel cover. The tires and wheels are all in very good order. This truck rides on a 110-inch wheelbase and has a 4,800 GVWR. Under the hood is Fords 292 CID Y-Block V-8 engine, mated to a Four-speed manual transmission and backed by a 3.92:1 rear end. Inside, a gray bench seat looks great while the minimalist red instrument panel is in good, original order, as are in the inner door liners. The gray headliner is in satisfactory shape. A three-spoke steering wheel is in decent shape. The horn button on the 53 F-100 is unique and displays the anniversary year. Odometer is inoperable. A fresh air cab option on the 53 F-100 was available. Deluxe 53 F-100 trucks had six chrome teeth mounted in the grille three on each side of the center chrome emblem. Deluxe trucks also had a chrome gull wing on each side of the hood surrounding the chrome 53 F-100 emblem. A floor shifter completes the interior. Turn signals were not standard equipment. Seat belts were also not available. Vacuum wipers were used and only worked when the driver let up on the gas pedal to free up vacuum from the engine to run the wipers. Front suspension was a straight axle with leaf springs. Brakes consisted of a single master cylinder with drum brakes on all four corners. In place of the previous Bonus-Built series, Ford now marketed its truck range as the Triple Economy series. To further emphasize the model update, Ford changed the F-Series model nomenclature from a single number to three numbers; subsequently, this system has remained in use on all Ford F-Series trucks to the present day. Alongside the naming change, this generation marked several firsts for the F-Series, including an adjustable seat (wide enough for three people), power brakes and the introduction of the Ford-O-Matic automatic transmission as an option. Documentation includes a folder of Ford details and assorted documents; original 54-55 Ford Truck Shop Manual; two copies of Obsolete Ford Parts 1948-1956, from September of 1996 and September of 2006; a 1953 Ford Truck Operators Manual; and a 1953 Ford Truck Illustrated Facts and Features manual. Competition to this F-100 in 1953 included Chevrolets 3100 half-ton, Dodges B-series half-ton, GMCs New Design half-ton, International Harvesters R-series half-ton and Willys-Overlands half-ton.
