This particular Sonett is one of the 899 Sonetts built by Saab in 1968. The primary influence of the Sonett came from a little fiberglass coupe called the MFI-13, which was an evolution of the work initiated by the independent engineer, Bjrn Karlsrm. He had been toying with various small car ideas for years, trying to get someone interested. A firm called MFI was the first one, but it eventually ended up with Saab, in about 1960 or so, in part because their American dealers were vocally itching for a sports car to sell, during the great boom era for that category. This 68 Saab Sonett is a VERY rarely seen Scandinavian sports car that is sure to be a hit with everyone who encounters this bright blue coupe and the owner will always appreciate the nimble handling and raw performance. Only 899 Saab Sonetts were produced and its unknown how many still exist today especially in road worthy condition such as this one. The Sonetts body is fiberglass, and sits on a rigid steel box-type chassis and integral structural roll bar, a recipe for good handling. The blue exterior paint is in good condition and looks nice and bright with only a few minor imperfections. The front hood racing stripes are in great condition and gives the Sonett that late 60s European racing look. Inside, the interior presents itself with a handsome Scandinavian vibe starting with desirable low back bucket seats, a new set of black carpet and a new headliner. The bucket seats have hounds-tooth fabric but are starting to show their age with some tears. All the gauges work and illuminate at night in exception of the fuel light is missing the needle. The rear trunk space is tidy and the rare curved backed window is in excellent condition. Under the hood, the tiny engine bay with the 1,498cc European Ford Taunus V4 engine looks neat and tidy. The previous owner stated that he recently had the engine rebuilt with ported heads. The powertrain is front wheel drive with a four speed column shift free wheeling transmission. This Saab Sonett is an excellent entry level vintage European sports car that does not take up much space and is an absolute joy to drive on the back roads all while getting over 35+ MPGs!
