Description

1958 Chevrolet Bel-Air Coupe Debut year for the Bel-Air halo model 327 CID V-8 power plant from a 1968 Camaro with dual exhaust Turbo Hydramatic 400 three-speed automatic transmission with rebuilt rear end Onyx Black over Arctic White exterior (code 950D) Newer black-and-white vinyl interior New parts include engine gaskets, water pump, starter, fuel pump, alternator, front and rear transmission seals, master cylinder and brakes and windshield If a classic Chevrolet that is not a Tri-Five (1955, 56 or 57) this 1958 Bel-Air Coupe might be to your liking. For 1958, Chevrolet models were longer, lower and heavier than the 1957 models. The Bel-Air gained status as a halo vehicle in 1958, while two other models, the mid-level Biscayne (formerly the 210) and the entry-level Delray (formerly the 150) were also available that year. This example was made in General Motors Los Angeles, California factory (VIN code L) Dressed in Onyx Black over Arctic White (code 950D), the cars paint and trim are in overall very good order. The bodywork is straight and solid, the engine bay is very tidy and the Extreme Energy battery looks good. There are chrome bumpers front and rear. This car rolls on wide whitewall tires. The tires are in good, original order and are mounted on steel wheels topped with factory wheel covers. The covers feature the crossed flags that became part of the Corvettes iconography. Under the counterbalanced hood is a 327 CID V-8 engine from a 1968 Camaro with dual exhaust. Backing up the motor is a Turbo Hydramatic 400 three-speed automatic transmission with a rebuilt differential. The car has has plenty of new parts engine gaskets, water pump, starter, fuel pump, alternator, front and rear transmission seals, master cylinder, brakes and windshield. Inside, the new interior mirrors the exterior, black seating surfaces with white sides make the front and rear bench seats appear in very good order. The black carpet and headliner offer great contrast. A two-spoke steering wheel faces the driver but the horn and wipers are inoperable. The black-and-white metal instrument panel and black and white door panels echo the rest of the interior. A factory AM radio is in the dash with a Jensen AM/FM stereo with cassette deck mounted blow the dashboard. Even the dome light still works! Chevrolets design for the year fared better than its other GM offerings and lacked the overabundance of chrome found on its corporate cousins. Complementing Chevrolets front design was a broad grille and quad headlights; the tail received a fan-shaped alcove on both side panels, which housed dual taillights. Despite being a recession year, consumers made Chevrolet the No. 1 make of automobile, and the Bel-Air was at the core of Chevrolets popularity. With its wide variety of body styles and models, Bel-Airs could be optioned with almost every conceivable luxury within the Chevrolet line. A new dash was used. The 1958 Bel-Air featured Chevrolets new Safety-Girder cruciform frame. Similar in layout to the frame adopted for the 1957 Cadillac, it featured box-section side rails and a boxed front cross member that bowed under the engine. These x-frames were used on other 1958 to 1964 Chevys, as well as Cadillacs. The rear was tied together by a channel-section cross member. For the first time, Powerglide models featured the PRNDL transmission selector arrangement, replacing the oft-criticized PNDLR quadrant that many considered confusing at best, dangerous at worst. Competition to this Bel-Air in 1958 included Dodges Coronet, Fords Fairlane 500, Plymouths Belvedere and Ramblers Six Super. This is a rare beauty, a late 50s Chevy with no luxuries and a transplanted motor. Its a good, strong driver with plenty of highway passing power and thanks to its long wheelbase, a comfortable ride.
