Care for a spin, old chap? We could dash to the pub for some bangers and mash as dinner! What say you? MotoeXotica Classic Cars is pleased to present this seldom-seen British Racing Green1952 MG TD Midget. Built on January 2, 1952 at MGs Abingdon, Oxfordshire, England assembly plant, this example is one of 10,838 MG TD Midgets made in 1952 and one of only 371 right-hand drive models made for export. Earlier MG TCs made a lot of soldiers and airmen salivate during their service time in Europe for World War II and it wasnt long before they wondered how easy it would be to take one or 100 home with them after the war ended. They werent the only ones. During the early 1950s, Detroit execs started wondering similar things but thats another story. Dressed in British Racing Green, this cars paint and trim are in overall very good order. The cars bodywork is straight and solid, the engine bay is extremely tidy and the chrome bumpers look great. This roadster rolls on Goodyear Arriva radials, size 165/80R15 at every corner. The tires are mounted on steel wheels topped with factory, vented wheel covers. The wheels and tires are all in good, original condition. Under the bonnet is a 1.3L OHV four-cylinder engine with dual SU carburetors and backed by a four-speed manual transmission with synchromesh in second, third and fourth gears. Car has rack-and-pinion steering, independent front suspension with a live rear axle. Inside, the black leather seats are in excellent order while the black carpet is in good, original condition. A three-spoke steering wheel faces the driver and is in very good condition. The inner door panels and the instrument panel are all in very good shape, as is the floor-mounted shifter. The 1950 TD Midget announced in January 1950 combined the TCs drivetrain, a modified hypoid-geared rear axle, the MG Y-type chassis, a familiar T-type style body and independent suspension on front axle using coil springs from the MG Y-type saloon: a 1950 road-test report described as most striking the resulting transformation ... in the comfort of riding. The reference cited here was incorrect to infer the entire drivetrain was lifted from the TC, as along with the new hypoid differential, a completely different transmission was used (albeit also a four-speed). Also lifted from the company's successful 1-litre saloon was the (still highly geared) rack and pinion steering. In addition, the TD featured smaller 15-inch disc type road wheels, a left-hand drive option and standard equipment bumpers and over-riders. The car was also five inches wider with a track of 50 inches. It was seen by enthusiasts at the time as a disappointment, mild and not a sports car. . . . the new model is largely designed to consolidate and expand the car's sale in North America. For the driver, the all-weather protection was good by the standards of the time. For night driving, instrument illumination was effective but not dazzling, by a pale green lighting effect. There was still no fuel gauge, but the 12 imp gal (14.5 US gal) of tank capacity gave a range between refueling stops of about 300 miles and a green light on the facia flashed a warning when the fuel level was down to about 2.5 imp gal (3 US gal). Chassis No. TD12624?Engine No. XPAG/TD2/13097?Production Car No. TD/12624 EXR Competition to this MG in 1952 included Porsches 356 and Chevrolets new-for-53 Corvette. Tally ho!
