The paint and body was performed by Premier Motorsports, interior by G&J Auto Trim and the engine/trans/rear by the best in the BMW business, Metrics Mechanics of Kansas City (now in Richland, Missouri). With production dwindling down and a new model, the 3-Series, on its way to production, BMW put the finishing touches on one of the models that helped keep the company profitable during the late 1960s and early 1970s, the BMW 2002. After the round-light models earlier in the decade, the 1976 2002 carried rectangular taillights. This model was produced between January and June 1976. Finished in Polaris Silver (code 60), the cars paint and trim are in overall very good condition. The car was always garaged and pampered as the photos will show. The BMWs bodywork is straight, the engine bay is extremely tidy and looks prepped to race! The cars chrome bumpers fit tightly to the body and look good. This BMW rolls on Goodyear Eagle RS-A radials, size P195/55R15 at every corner. Each tire is wrapped around a Panasport finned alloy wheels. The wheels and tires are all in very good condition. Under the hood is a built 2.0L fuel-injected four-cylinder engine (code M10) by Metrics Mechanics in Kansas City. They also built the Borg-Warner four-speed manual transmission and the 3.64:1 rear end and added LSD. Metric Mechanics customers are BMW enthusiasts seeking greater performance & reliability for the BMW they relate to so strongly. Their normally aspirated engine rebuilds provide 25% 50% more HP & twice the longevity! Driver convenience features include fully independent suspension, rack-and-pinion suspension and disc/drum brakes.Top End Performance in Chatsworth, California provided the suspension parts, strut braces and roll cage that fits in the back seat. Inside, G&J Auto Trim in Olathe, Kansas fabricated and installed the seats, door cards and carpet. The tan leather custom racing front buckets with harnesses are in overall very good order, while the corresponding tan carpet shot through with black is in excellent order. The neutral headliner looks great, as do the inner door panels and instrument panel with VDO gauges and faux walnut accent. A Momo three-spoke steering wheel faces the driver. An AM/FM stereo with CD player completes the interior. The BMW 2002 made its debut in 1968; a base model with a single carburetor developing just 101 hp, which was no real improvement over what the Datsun 510 was delivering, and a 2002ti version fitted with twin Solex 40 carburetors and a higher compression engine delivering a useful 119 horsepower and a top speed of 115 mph. This gave the 2002ti performance to match cars like the Austin-Healey 3000 Mk III but in a four-seater car with decent boot space. The cars weight had increased to 2,300 lbs but the 2002Ti had the horses to pull those extra pounds around and deliver the performance drivers were looking for. Competition to this BMW in 1976 included Chevrolets Cosworth Vega, Datsuns 510, Hondas Civic and Toyotas Celica GT.
