The first prototype Delorean appeared in October 1976, and production officially began in 1981 in Dunmurry, a suburb of south west Belfast, Northern Ireland (with the first DMC-12 rolling off the production line on January 21). During its production, several features of the car were changed, such as the hood style, wheels and interior. Approximately 9,000 DMC-12s were made before production halted in late 1982.The DMC-12 was the only model produced by the company which would go into liquidation as the US car market went through its largest slump since the 1930s. Today, about 6,500 Delorean Motor cars are believed to still exist. The most famous of these Deloreans is by far the "Back to the Future" car. There have been many copies made of this car but by far, the most accurate and complete example has been made by Texas TV Cars out of Dallas Texas. Owned by "Video Bob" Moseley, he is the only builder that is endorsed by Kevin Pike, the designer / builder of the original movie car. President Ronald Reagan, a fan of "Back to the Future", referred to the movie in his 1986 State of the Union address when he said, "Never has there been a more exciting time to be alive, a time of rousing wonder and heroic achievement. As they said in the film Back to the Future, 'Where we're going, we don't need roads. When he first saw the joke about his being president, he ordered the projectionist of the theater to stop the reel, roll it back, and run it again. George H. W. Bush also referenced Back to the Future in his speeches. The movie ranked number 28 on Entertainment Weekly's list of the 50 Best High School Movies. In 2008, Back to the Future was voted the 23rd greatest film ever made by readers of Empire. It was also placed on a similar list by The New York Times, a list of 1000 movies. In January 2010, Total Film included the film on its list of The 100 Greatest Movies of All Time. On December 27, 2007, Back to the Future was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant". In 2006, the original screenplay for Back to the Future was selected by the Writers Guild of America as the 56th best screenplay of all time. In June 2008, the American Film Institute revealed the AFI's 10 Top 10 - the best ten films in ten "classic" American film genres - after polling more than 1,500 people from the creative community. Back to the Future was acknowledged as the 10th best film in the science fiction genre. The '81 Delorean you see here was built by Video Bob Moseley of Texas TV Cars of Dallas, TX. Video Bob is the only builder that is endorsed by Kevin Pike, the designer / builder of the original movie cars. Many of the props on the car were created using the original molds and design drawings from 1984, when the movie was first made. According to his website, only 9 of these cars have ever been made. This car is the culmination of 8 years of research including close examination and measurements of the original screen used cars, in depth interviews with the original builders and sourcing of parts from the original locations using the same parts as were used on the original cars. These replicas featured the help of "Kevin Pike" who was the special effects supervisor for the 1985 film "Back To The Future" and he and his team built the original cars for the film. Kevin has helped with the research and sourcing of parts from original locations as well as supervised the building of the first of these cars to meet his satisfaction and requirements.The conversion features all of the iconic props as remembered from the film, including a working "Flux Capacitor" made from the same rare internal glass relays as originally found in early WWII Military radios. The "Time Circuits" on the center console operate just like they did in the movie, allowing you to input any time and date you wish. When the "Time Drive Switch" is turned on, all of the internal props come to life with all of the sound effects as heard in the film. The "Plutonium Gauges" light up and the needles jump to position. The overhead console ignites with over 40 lighted buttons and switches and can be flipped on and off.The exterior props include the "Flux Bands" that wrap around the front bumper, top, sides and bottom of the car. They connect to "Flux Boxes" that were originally molded from original screen used parts. The rear deck features custom aluminum vents that are 100% screen accurate as measured from the screen used hero car. The vents are topped with the famous "Mr.Fusion Home Energy Reactor" that is made from molds of the original parts. There are also many extra details including high pressure hoses and braided lines, military electrical connections and vintage aircraft parts that make this car look like something ready to travel through space and time!!! The aluminum rear vents also feature a concert style fog machine that blasts thick white fog (safe water vapor fog) and can be controlled from inside the car manually or by automatic timer. The entire car is electrically powered by 4 gel cell batteries that total 4000 amps of power including a 2000 watt power inverter and built in 75 amp DC charger so the car can be plugged in for permanent display or be displayed without draining the batteries.The current miles on the car shows 36,675 and the VIN number is SCEDT26T4BD001305.
