Description

In 1950, Karmann approached Volkswagen with a design for a new vehicle. Karmann had a working relationship with Volkswagen that went prior to this project that included the Volkswagen Beetle Cabriolet. The idea was initially rejected by Volkswagen so Karmann approached the coach building company Carrozzeria Ghia of Turin who built the first prototype of the vehicle, completing in 1953. In November of 1953, Nordhoff, the head of Volkswagen at the time, gave approval for the vehicle to be built by his company. On July 14th in 1955, the vehicle was unveiled to the public. There were basically three types of the Karmann-Ghia's built during its life span that included the type 14, type 34, and the TC. The type 14 featured a round body-style that received very little modifications through its production life-span, dating from 1955 through 1974. Most of the modifications that did transpire were head and tail light modifications, bumper and side air vent changes. During this time about 340,000 coupes and 81,000 convertibles were produced in Osnabruck Germany. This great looking '64 Volkswagen Karmann Ghia Convertible comes finished in Red with a white top and custom red and white vinyl interior. The car has benefited from an older restoration that still shows very well today. The paint is in very good overall condition with no significant imperfections. There are a few minor scratches and dings from age but overall looks very good. The white convertible top is equally as nice with no tears or rips. When down, it's covered with a white boot. The front and rear chrome bumpers are in great condition with no damage showing to either. Inside, the seats have been recovered in a red and white vinyl which looks very good. The carpet appears to be new and in very good condition. The dash door panels have been recovered in the same material and pattern as the seats. The dash has been painted to match the rest of the car and looks great. The speaker grill on top of the dash is missing. There have been seat belts added to the front seats. Under the rear bonnet the engine is in very good, original condition with no damage. The carb appears to have been recently rebuilt and operates as it should. Turn the key and the car starts with no problems and runs down the road smooth. The four speed manual transmission shifts with no problems and the clutch feels strong. The front trunk is solid with no rot that we have found. The floors look great and have been undercoated. It appears that the floor pans are original. The mileage shows 65,892 and the VIN number is 5719436.
