Description

Standard Motor Company was founded in Coventry in 1903. Possibly the most important thing Standard ever did, from our point of view, was purchase Triumph out of receivership in 1945. The "Standard-Triumph Company" continued until 1960 when they were taken over by Leyland. The Standard nameplate only stayed in use in Britain until 1963, but it remained in use in India until the 1980s. (The Triumph Herald was called "Standard Herald" in the Indian market.) BMW now owns both the Triumph and Standard nameplates. The car you see here is a very special and incredibly rare piece of history. This is a fully documented, two owner 1947 Standard 8hp that was originally brought to the United States on July 4, 1947. This is an original left hand drive car, as ordered from the factory. Originally purchased from Oxford Motors Limited in British Columbia, this was the closest dealer to California where the original owner lived. The Doctor who originally ordered the car traveled from California to Canada to special order the car to import into the United States. He cared for the car for 62 years before selling it to the gentleman we purchased it from. This is believed to be the only left hand drive Standard in the United States. We have photos of the restoration, receipts for an engine rebuild, California registrations, original buyers invoice, bill of sale from the original owner to the second owner, the California yellow plates and all of the original tools. Also included are the original work shop manuals, owner's manuals and the original spare tire which is still in the trunk. This has always been an incredibly solid car with no rust. The paint on the car is spectacular. It's truly a mirror like finish as you can see in the photos. The body is incredibly straight and solid and all door shut perfectly. We have photos of the car during the paint process that shows its solidness. The body was disassembled during paint as you can see in the photos. All of the chrome was redone on the car during the restoration and is spotless. Inside, the interior is all correct and in great condition. It's said to be 100% original and has never seen any kind of restoration. The seats are in very good condition with no notable wear. The carpets show some very minor wear which is expected from a car of this age but overall look very good. The dash is good and all of the gauges are in good working order. The car still retains its "Oxford Motors Limited sticker on the dash where it was originally purchased from. Under the hood, the side valve 1021 cc long stroke inline 4 cylinder runs with a turn of the key and a push of the starter button. The motor was rebuilt during the restoration and we have receipts to show this. The motor is very clean and in good, original condition under the hood. Connected to the 4 speed manual transmission, the car goes down the road with no problems. While not the fastest car you'll ever be in, it's a great little car for around town driving and capable of speeds up to 65 mph! The underside is very solid and shows it's been in California its entire life. The wheels have been repainted and look great and are wrapped with new bias play tires. The current mileage shows 26,158 and is said to be original for the car. VIN number is 373473 and the car is being sold on a clean Oregon title.
