Description

The GTO was the brainchild of Pontiac engineer Russell Gee, an engine specialist; Bill Collins, a chassis engineer; and Pontiac chief engineer John DeLorean. In early 1963, General Motors' management issued an edict banning divisions from involvement in auto racing. At the time, Pontiac's advertising and marketing approach was heavily based on performance, and racing was an important component of that strategy. With GM's ban on factory-sponsored racing, Pontiac's young, visionary management turned its attention to emphasizing street performance. The GTO was basically a violation of GM policy limiting the A-body intermediate line to a maximum engine displacement of 330 cu in (5.4 L). Since the GTO was an option package and not standard equipment, it could be considered to fall into a loophole in the policy. Pontiac General Manager Elliot "Pete" Estes approved the new model, although sales manager Frank Bridge, who did not believe it would find a market, insisted on limiting initial production to no more than 5,000 cars. The car you see here is a 1965 Pontiac GTO with PHS documentation and factory A/C. The body of this car is very solid as it spent the majority of its life in the dry state of Texas. A recipient of new paint in the recent years, the silver paint itself looks fantastic. The chrome on the car appears original and is still shiny with only minor scratches and imperfections, as you can see in the photos. The wheels on the two door, sports coupe are what appear to be Oldsmobile Rally wheels, with decent tires that show minor age cracking. The A/C unit appears complete, but is currently non functional.Inside the GTO, you will the interior is 100% original from the headliner to the carpet, the dash to the seats. The front seats do show wear, which is typical of a 48 year old car. The driver's door shows some imperfections, as well as the vinyl wood on the gauge bezel. The headliner also shows wear and some imperfections. There is new black carpet inside as well!Under the hood, you will find the engine bay is housing the 389 cubic inch V8 with a four barrel carburetor. This 389 was rated to produce up to 325 horsepower. Attached to the V8 is an automatic transmission. The GTO has both power steering and power brakes. The car has also received a new gas tank and straps. We aren't representing this as a perfect GTO and are selling it as you see it and as described. The car is a very solid driver that has been well preserved over the years. This silver GTO has the perfect solid bones for an excellent restoration. The VIN number is 237375Z101389 and the mileage currently shows 78,708. It is being sold on a clean and clear title. GET OUT AND DRIVE!!!
