Description

Industrialist Powel Crosley, Jr., of Cincinnati, Ohio, owner of Crosley Broadcasting Corporation and the Cincinnati Reds baseball team, had ambitious plans to build a subcompact car and with the able assistance of his younger, graduate engineer brother Lewis Crosley, developed assembly plants at Richmond, Indiana, and Marion, Indiana. In May 1939, the first car was shown at the Indianapolis Speedway. It was a two-door convertible that weighed under 1,000-pound and sold for $250. It did not achieve sales success, but in 1941 more body styles were introduced. In 1941, the body styles available were expanded to include two and four-passenger convertibles, a convertible sedan, a station wagon, a panel truck, a pickup, and two models called "Parkway Delivery" (a mini-panel with no roof over the front seat) and "Covered Wagon" (a convertible pickup truck with a removable back seat). Crosley's first metal-topped sedan (the Liberty Sedan) was introduced for 1942.During World War II, the Crosley became attractive because of gasoline rationing and the good mileage it could achieve: 50 miles per gallon. Crosley was the last company to cease production of civilian vehicles in 1942, partly to aid Crosley sales to facilitate fuel conservation, and partly because the War Production Board needed time to determine a use for Crosley's small factories. There were only 1,029 Crosley's built from the fall of 1941 until they ceased production for WWII in February 1942. The original price for this Victory Sedan was $350. Said to have been owned by the Crosley factory until 1946, we have copies of the 1945 Cincinnati Motor Vehicle Inspection as well as the Ohio Dealers Registration Car that shows the car belonging to Crosley Motors Inc. We also have copies of the original Crosley Owners Identification card / post card that every customer received at delivery. This is a very rare Crosley twin carb and was an experimental prototype that Corsley produced to increase overall performance. Crosley used it to showcase the power plant upgrade to customers and the carbs are said to be the same that was used on Indian motorcycles. The paint on the car is nearly perfect and appears to be a fairly recent paint job. The tan canvas top is equally as nice with no rips, tears or staining. The bumpers have both been painted black as no chrome was being used during WWII due to shortages and rationing. Inside, you will find all new upholstered seats and fresh paint to match the exterior. The interior is nearly new throughout and shows no notable wear. There have been rubber mats installed on the painted floors as they came from the factory. Gauges are all in good condition and are new. Under the hood, the 580cc two cylinder runs and drives with just a turn of the key and a pull of the starter. This is a very rare twin carb version that is said to be the only twin carb known to exist. The three speed manual transmission shifts with no problems and the clutch is strong. The underside of the car is very solid and in wonderful condition as you can see in the photos. All of the bias ply tires are new as well as the spare. They are wrapped around painted wheels with body colored hubcaps. VIN number is CB4234347 and the current mileage shows 10,037.
