Description

Industrialist Powel Crosley, Jr., of Cincinnati, Ohio, owner of Crosley Broadcasting Corporation and the Cincinnati Reds baseball team, had ambitious plans to build a subcompact car and with the able assistance of his younger, graduate engineer brother Lewis Crosley, developed assembly plants at Richmond, Indiana, and Marion, Indiana. In May 1939, the first car was shown at the Indianapolis Speedway. It was a two-door convertible that weighed under 1,000-pound and sold for $250. It did not achieve sales success, but in 1941 more body styles were introduced. In 1941, the body styles available were expanded to include two and four-passenger convertibles, a convertible sedan, a station wagon, a panel truck, a pickup, and two models called "Parkway Delivery" (a mini-panel with no roof over the front seat) and "Covered Wagon" (a convertible pickup truck with a removable back seat). Crosley's first metal-topped sedan (the Liberty Sedan) was introduced for 1942.During World War II, the Crosley became attractive because of gasoline rationing and the good mileage it could achieve: 50 miles per gallon. Crosley was the last company to cease production of civilian vehicles in 1942, partly to aid Crosley sales to facilitate fuel conservation, and partly because the War Production Board needed time to determine a use for Crosley's small factories. The 1947-1948 Crosley Convertible & Wagon was the first of the postwar Crosleys, still on an 80-inch wheelbase but more than two feet longer and looking more "grownup" with new flush-fender styling. Production commenced June 1946, but cars built that year -- convertibles and sedans only -- were technically '47s.This '47 Crosley Convertible is possibly one of nicest Crosley's in existence. With only 96 miles since the complete, nut and bolt restoration, the car looks better today than it did when it left the factory. Finished in the correct shade of yellow with tan top, the car is nearly perfect outside with no notable imperfections. The front and rear chrome bumpers look great with no pitting or damage to be found. The tan soft top shows no rips, tears or stains. Inside, the reupholstered tan seats are perfect in the front and back. The interior has been painted to match the exterior and looks great. The car does have a correct Crosley Motorola AM radio installed that emits only static. Gauges are in good working order, as are the lights.Under the hood, the inline 4 cylinder runs great and has been nicely finished. Connected to the 3 speed manual transmission, the car shifts with on problems and goes down the road with all power a Crosley is known for. The car is still on the original 6 volt system. The underside has been finished in the same quality and color as the exterior. The frame has been painted a gloss black finish to make this car look as good underneath as it does on top. The current mileage shows 99 and is since the restoration. Vin number is CC4715626.
