Description

The Triumph TR4 was introduced in 1961. The body had been given a more modern and updated appearance by Michelotti from the TR3 but its drive-train and chassis were based on its TR predecessors. Production lasted until 1965 when it was replaced by the TR4A. The introduction of the TR4 eliminated a few of the inconveniences by offering roll-up windows in place of the noisy and impractical side-curtains. A redesigned angular rear allowed for a trunk. The trunk and roll-up windows meant that items could be stored safely in the car. The prior plastic side curtains were easily torn and property was often stolen. The soft top could still be compromised but with the addition of the optional removable hard top, the TR4 became very versatile. The hard top had a fixed glass rear window and an integral roll-bar. The first five hundred produced had an aluminum center panel while the rest had a steel center unit. The TR4 had improved performance for the little sports car. The track was enlarged and the steering now used a rack-and-pinion unit. The transmission was now fully synchronized on all gears and the engine was enlarged slightly. An optional Laycock de Normanville electrically operated overdrive could be selected for second, third, and fourth gear. This '64 TR4 is a rare surrey top model, originally advertised as the TR4 "Hard Top". For those unfamiliar with this option, the center section is easily removable, making an open top similar to a Porsche Targa. (Dr. Porsche must have liked the idea because they soon copied it).To quote the 1964 Triumph TR4 sales brochure, which is included, this is the "Hard Top model with detachable roof section. With top removed and windows up, you get an exhilarating sun-drenched, draft-free ride."The paint on the car is in good condition overall with no major imperfection to note. The body appears to be very solid with no bubbling or rot that we have found. Both door shut as they should as does the trunk and hood. Bumpers have been rechromed in the front and back which both look great. The same goes for the stainless trim. The top is in good condition and goes on and off with no problems. Inside, the seats have been reupholstered and are in very good condition. The same goes for the door panels and back seat area which are all finished in black vinyl. The carpet is new as well as the wood dash. All gauges are in good working order as well as the lights and blinkers. Under the hood, the four cylinder runs great and is fed with dual SU carbs. With a pull of the choke the car fires to life and is a blast to drive. The engine compartment is very clean and has been nicely detailed. Connected to the four speed manual transmission, the car is a blast to drive. It does not have overdrive. There wire wheels are all in great condition and are wrapped with newer radial tires. In the trunk you will find the original spare and jack. The trunk is solid with no holes or rot to be found. The same goes for the underside which shows no undercoating and is very solid. It's rare to see these cars with the original bare metal underneath. The current mileage shows 59,729 and the VIN number is CT18445L. The car is being sold on a clean Tennessee title where it shows that the car was in Colorado before Tennessee.
