Description

The Beetle Cabriolet began production in 1949 by Karmann in Osnabruck. It was in 1948 when Wilhelm Karmann bought a VW Beetle sedan and converted it into a four-seated convertible. After successfully presenting it at VW in Wolfsburg, production started in 1949. After a number of stylistic and technical alterations made to the Karmann cabriolet, (corresponding to the many changes VW made to the Beetle throughout its history), the last of 331,847 cabriolets came off the conveyor belt on 10 January 1980.The car you see here is truly one of the nicest, if not THE nicest 1960 Volkswagen Beetle Convertible's in the world. The attention to detail on the car is second to none and shows throughout. From the detailed chassis to the "Poppy Red" paint, this car draws attention no matter where it goes. This is a true, three owner car with the second owner having the car until 2011. The original, New Mexico owner, had the car until 1971 when they sold it to the second owner, also in New Mexico. We have copies of the title and bill of sale for this transaction that dates February 22, 1971. We purchased the car from the third owner who is the one that did the restoration. Volkswagen enthusiasts might remember the 1965 Volkswagen Samba 21 window that sold at Barrett Jackson in January, 2011 for $70,000. The Samba was restored by the same gentleman who did this car and knowing both vehicles, this Beetle is actually nicer then the Samba. The body on the car was stripped down to bare metal during the restoration and the inside floors and walls were all sealed with POR15 to prevent any future moisture damage. The skim coat of "Rage Gold" body filler was used where needed before the body was primed and dry blocked numerous times in two part Urethane products. The paint is the original color of Poppy Red. The entire body was covered with a white urethane sealer and a Nason base coat / clear coat was applied. The entire body and ever single panel was then color sanded and buffed to a extremely high, mirror like finish with no orange peel. The convertible top was frame was disassembled, media blasted and then powder coated before a new napped cloth headliner was installed and a Stayfast canvas top. There was foam padding installed throughout as well as new rubber side seals and a new rear window mounting frame. The interior is all new and done to the highest quality. All of the seat frames were media blasted and powder coated with all new "leatherette" seat covers installed in the original style. New foam seat pads were installed under the covers. Matching, original style door panels were also installed. The new oatmeal carpet is as perfect as the rest of the car and looks great. The engine is the stock, 36 horsepower 4 cylinder that has had all new gaskets and seals installed. All of the original German tin surrounding the motor was media blasted and powder coated satin black which looks great. The car retains the correct and functioning "bee hive" fan set up for proper engine warm up. The carb, fuel pump and distributor have all been rebuilt as well. The restoration didn't stop on top. The underside of the car is as nice as you will find. The car retains its stock front beam and rear axle which have both been repainted. The brake system is all new with new hard and soft brake lines, wheel cylinders, master cylinder and shoes inside of freshly turned drums. The shocks on all four corners are new as well as the cables for the accelerator, clutch, heater and emergency brake. Nosecone bushings and link pin bushings are new as well. The wheels are all correct "smoothie" rims which were media blasted and powder coated. They are wrapped with new Coker wide white tires, including the spare! Beauty rings and hub caps are new as well. There is truly too much to list on this car and is one of the nicest you will ever find. The attention to detail and workmanship is absolutely second to none. The current mileage shows 86,062 and the VIN number is 3169767. The car is being sold on a clean New Mexico title.
