Description

January 1959 saw the start of Metropolitan Series IV production (Commencing with VIN E59048 on 12 January 1959). This major re-design saw the addition of an external deck lid (previous models only allowed access to the trunk through the rear seat back) and vent windows. By this time, the engine had been up-graded by increasing the compression ratio from 7.2:1 to 8.3:1 giving an output of 55 bhp. The additional features added 15 lb to the weight. Exterior color options were the same as for Series III. The interior now used a "Diamond" patterned material for the seats, with white vinyl trim. The MSRP for Series IV models was $1,672.60 (Hardtop) and $1,696.80 (Convertible).Sales rose to 22,209 units in 1959, the Metropolitan's best-selling year, promoting it to second place behind Volkswagen in sales of cars imported to the U.S. American Motors' advertising "made much" of this ranking, while it omitted the fact that the Volkswagen outsold the Metropolitan by 51/2 to 1.This '59 Nash Metropolitan Convertible is a wonderfully restored micro car that comes finished in a two tone, black and red with black convertible top. We have a photo album of the complete restoration of the car that includes new floor pans, paint and interior. The paint on the car is in very good overall condition with only a few minor blemishes. The car appears to have been resprayed in 2009. The convertible top looks brand new as well. Both front and rear chrome bumpers are in great condition with no major imperfections to show and appear to have been rechromed.Inside, the seats are both in great condition and have been reupholstered. The carpet is new as well as the door panels and the painted dash. The steering wheel is solid and shows no cracking. It's been painted red with a black center that looks great. Under the hood, the little 4 cylinder has been nicely detailed and looks great. The motor runs great and is connected to the 3 speed manual transmission. The trunk has been nicely finished to match the interior and includes a jack. The underside is solid and any rust that was there has been cut out and replaced with metal. We have photos of the floors showing the fresh metal installed during the restoration. The VIN number is E87341 and the current mileage shows 65,597. The car is being sold on a clean Florida title.
