Description

The MGB is a sports car launched by MG Cars in May 1962 to replace the MGA. Introduced as a four-cylinder roadster, a coup with 2+2 seating was added in 1965. The MGB was a relatively modern design at the time of its introduction, utilizing a monocoque structure instead of the traditional body-on-frame construction used on both the MGA and MG T-types and the MGB's rival, the Triumph TR series. The lightweight design reduced manufacturing costs while adding to overall vehicle strength. Wind-up windows were standard, and a comfortable driver's compartment offered plenty of legroom. A parcel shelf was fitted behind the seats. In late 1967, sufficient changes were introduced for the factory to define a Mark II model. Changes included synchromesh on all 4 gears with revised ratios, a new rear axle and an alternator in place of the dynamo with a change to a negative earth system. To accommodate the new gearboxes there were significant changes to the sheet metal in the floor pan, and a new flat-topped transmission tunnel. All models are rear-wheel drive. To meet US safety regulations, later North American tourers got three windscreen wipers instead of just two (to sweep the required percentage of the glass), and also received a plastic and foam rubber covered "safety" dashboard, dubbed the "Abingdon pillow". 1971 also saw a new front grille, recessed, in black aluminum. The more traditional-looking polished grille returned in 1972 with a black "honeycomb" insert. 1970 saw split rear bumpers with the number-plate in between, 1971 returned to the earlier five-piece style. This particular steel bumper 1972 MGB comes with a 1 inch stack of receipts that total over $15,000 showing that this car was completely gone through from engine rebuilds to paint! The car also comes with the rarely seen hardtop. The majority of the restoration took place in 2006 - 2007 with the exception of the paint which was done in September of 2011. The car has been re finished in the classic color of British racing green with a black cloth convertible soft top and hardtop. The paint is in very good condition with no major imperfections to speak of. Both front and rear steel bumpers are in great condition and have been rechromed. The fiberglass hardtop is original and does show some scratches. The rear window also has a crack in it. Inside the leather seats are in great condition with no notable wear. The same goes for the carpet, dash and door panels. All of this is new and we have receipts to show that they were bought in 2007. The black / ivory contrasting interior looks great and really sets the car off. Under the hood this vehicle is equipped with an inline 4 cylinder making nearly 100 hp and is attached to a 4 speed synchronized transmission that shifts smoothly. This vehicle has been beautifully maintained and it shows. With 13,000 miles since the complete motor rebuild, the car is well sorted out. During the rebuild, the block was bored .20 over, new shallow dish 6.2cc pistons were installed along with new seals, bronze guides, hardened seats, stainless exhaust valves, upgraded 70 psi oil pump, HS4 SU carbs, new clutch, distributor, timing chain and exhaust. The underside of the car is very solid and has had new full length Heritage Floor Pans installed. Every bushing in the suspension has been replaced with new polyurethane bushings and the car has been lowered one inch in the front and rear. In the trunk this vehicle has its original spare tire and jack and shows no sign of rust or rot. The VIN is GHN5UC289427G and the odometer shows 14,430.
