Description

The Stutz Blackhawk was an American luxury car manufactured from 1971 through 1987. Other than the name it bears no resemblance with the original Stutz Blackhawk (1929-1931). The Stutz Motor Company was revived in August 1968 by New York banker James O'Donnell. He joined forces with retired Chrysler stylist Virgil Exner who designed the new Blackhawk. Exner's design included a spare tire that protruded through the trunk lid, a massive grille and freestanding headlamps. The new Blackhawk was prototyped by Ghia in Italy at a cost of over $300,000. To offer exclusivity and still allow easy servicing in the US a custom built Italian body was added to a GM platform and engine. The Blackhawk debuted in January 1970 at the Waldorf Astoria in New York City. Prices ranged from $22,500 to $75,000. All early Blackhawks were coupes, but rare sedans were produced later. Convertible versions were called D'Italia and Bearcat. Stutz Blackhawks became the car of choice among elite entertainers of the day. By 1976 Stutz had sold 205 Blackhawks and about six a month were handbuilt in Italy and shipped to the US. By April 1980 350 Blackhawks had been sold and by the time production ended in 1987 approximately 500 to 600 cars had been manufactured. The very first Blackhawk sold was purchased by Elvis Presley on October 9, 1970 for $26,500. This was the 2nd Blackhawk prototype, as built by Carrozzeria Padane (the first one, built by Ghia, was driven by James O'Donnell himself). Frank Sinatra had vied with Presley for the car. Sinatra was offered the 2nd prototype on the condition that the distributor, Jules Meyers, could show the car at the L.A. Auto show and got publicity photos with Sinatra at delivery. Sinatra declined but Presley accepted and ended up with the car. Other famous owners included Dick Martin (1971), Lucille Ball (who got her 1971 Blackhawk as a gift from her husband Gary Morton with a dash plaque saying I Love Lucy - Gary), Sammy Davis Jr. (who owned two 1972, one for himself and one for his wife), Dean Martin (who owned three and crashed his 1972 Blackhawk with vanity plate DRUNKY), Robert Goulet (1972), Evel Knievel (1974), Wilson Pickett (1974), Luigi Colani (1974), Johnnie Taylor (1975), Johnny Cash (1975), Curd Jrgens (1977), Larry Holmes (1982), as well as Jerry Lewis, Liberace, Willie Nelson, Lou Brock, Isaac Hayes, Muhammed Ali, George Foreman, Tom Jones, Billy Joel, Elton John, Paul McCartney, Al Pacino, Wayne Newton and H.B. Halicki. This particular '72 Stutz Blackhawk was the one and only Sammy Davis Jr. car. Being well documented from new, the car was originally purchased in dark blue but then professionally color changed to white. We have taken a photo of the A pillar under the weather stripping which still shows the original dark blue color where the white stops. This car is listed in the Stutz registry and was most notably stored in the Imperial Palace Auto Collection in Las Vegas for many years. This car still retains the original gold plaque that states the car was custom built for Sammy Davis Jr by Jules Meyers. Included is an authentic signed photo of Sammy Davis Jr., a 1977 First Day Cover (FDC) signed by Sammy Davis Jr. with COA and photographs of the car with Sammy. The paint on the car is in great condition with no notable imperfections. The front and rear chrome bumpers are in excellent condition as is all of the chrome trim surrounding the car. You will not find a more unique and classic looking 70's automobile then these Stutz Blackhawks. Add the celebrity prominence and history of the car, this is literally a one of a kind that would make a welcome addition to any collection. Inside, the blue interior is in very good, original condition and appears to have never been restored. The leather seats are all in great condition with no major rips or tears. The carpet does show some wear as you can see in the photos. All of the wood on the dash and door panels looks great with no major imperfections. The original AM/FM/Tape radio is inoperable. One of the most unique items is the brass shifter in the car. Very unique and something we've never seen in any other car. Under the hood, the big block 455 Cu In V8 runs great and is connected to a 3 speed automatic transmission. This is a factory A/C car. The engine compartment is extremely clean and tidy and shows no signs of previous damage. The trunk has been carpeted to match the rest of the interior and has the full size wire wheel spare mounted on top of it. The VIN number is 2K57Y2P139126 and the car is being sold on an actual mileage Arizona title. The current mileage shows 74,145.
