Description

In 1957 the TR3 was updated with various changes including a full width radiator grille and this face lifted model is now commonly referred to as the Triumph "TR3A". However the cars were not badged as such and the "TR3A" name was not used officially, as is evident from contemporary sales brochures. The "TR3A" was built between 1957 and 1962.The "TR3A" was a minor update from the TR3. The updates included the new wide front grill, exterior door handles, lockable boot handle and came with a full tool kit as standard (this was an option on the TR3). The total production run of the "TR3A" was 58,236. This makes it the third best-selling TR after the TR6 and TR7. It is estimated that only 9,500 of the original 58,000 built survive in the world today. The Triumph TR3 was the first production car to include standard disc brakes, which were continued on the "TR3A" facelift. The car was known for its superior braking ability, making it an autocross favorite. The '61 Triumph TR3A you see here is a very special car. Having been in the same family since 1967, this is the car that the second owners went on their first date in. With a documented history dating back to 1967 and a British Motor Industrial Heritage Trust Certificate, the car was a true love affair for this couple. With retirement on their mind and a move to Florida, it was time for the car to go to a new home. The gentleman we purchased the car from told us a story about his wife that used to drive this car everywhere she went with the top down. One day she was out with her young daughter and it started to rain. She simply put her under the tonneau cover and continued to drive without the top. Those were the days! Restored in 2008 / 2009, the car was stripped down to bare metal and refinished in British Racing Green. During this time, the interior was reupholstered and the engine went through a complete rebuild. We have photos and receipts of this restoration. If there was any rust on the car, it was cut out and new metal was welded in place. The paint today is in very good overall condition with only a few minor imperfections showing. The steel bumpers in the front and rear are original for the car and in very good condition. The car does come with a new soft top, tonneau cover and side windows. All of which are in great condition. Inside, the tan seats are in great condition and were professionally recovered during the restoration. The carpet is new as is all of the vinyl inside. Gauges are all in good working order. Nearly all of the materials inside the car are new from the Roadster Factory. The car does have a vintage AM radio with power antenna but the radio is currently inoperable. Under the hood, the inline 4 cylinder runs great and starts with a push of the button. The car has around 1,100 miles on it since the restoration. Connected to the four speed manual transmission, the car is a joy to drive. The engine compartment is very clean and detailed and is running on a 12 volt system. The 72 spoke chrome wire wheels are new and spotless. A matching wire wheel spare is in the spare tire area in the rear. From top to bottom, this is a very well sorted out car that I would feel confident enough to drive cross country. The current mileage shows 35,626 and only has around 1,100 miles since the restoration. VIN number is TS74462L.
