Description

In the 1960's, the Chevrolet Impala was America's best-selling car by far. Impala's appeal was far-reaching. It could be a sensible family sedan or spacious wagon, a sporty hardtop, a striking convertible or a storming, big-block Super Sport. In 1966, the Impala SS was face-lifted with a revised grille and new rectangular taillights that replaced the triple round units. A chrome beltline strip shared with regular Impalas was added in response to complaints about door dings on the clean-lined 1965s. Inside were new Strato bucket seats with thinner and higher seatbacks, and a center console with an optional gauge package available. Sales of the 1966 Impala SS dropped by more than 50% to around 117,000 units; this was mainly due to the sport/performance car market switching from full-sized models to intermediates (including Chevy's own Chevelle SS396 and Pontiac GTO), along with the emerging market for the even smaller pony car market created by the Ford Mustang in 1964 that Chevrolet would respond to with the Camaro for 1967.The '66 Impala SS you see here is an original Black Plate California car that has been in the state until 2011. This is an incredibly original car that comes with nearly all the options you could get in 1966. With only one repaint, a freshening of the engine compartment and new carpet, the car is nearly all original and showing only 90,976 original miles. The list of factory options include power steering, power brakes, A/C, tilt / telescoping steering wheel, AM/FM push button radio with front antenna and rear speaker, power windows and 3 speed transmission. The car has been repainted and is in very good condition overall. The paint retains a good shine and luster with only minimal wear showing. Both front and rear chrome bumpers appear to be original for the car and are in great condition. The same goes for the stainless trim around the car. This is an incredibly solid and straight body with all door gaps lining up as they should. Inside, the interior is nearly all original with only the carpets being replaced. The seats are in great condition as are the door panels, headliner and kick panels. The dash looks good but does have some cracking under the carpeted dash pad. The car retains its original AM/FM push button radio with rear speaker. Between the seats you will see the rare sound controls for the rear speaker. The car also has the tilt / telescoping steering wheel, power windows and seat belts in the front and rear. Under the hood you will find the original 396 big block with casting number 116522 which matches the VIN. The motor still retains its original California smog pump and A/C compressor. The motor has been freshened up and looks nearly as good as it did when it came off the assembly line. Connected to the three speed automatic transmission, the car goes down the road with ease. The underside has never seen any undercoating and is extremely solid throughout. The same goes for the trunk which retains its original spare, jack and matting. The current mileage shows 90,976 and is said to be original for the car. VIN number is 168376C116522.
