Description

The 280 SL was introduced in December 1967 and continued in production through 23 February 1971, when the W 113 was replaced by its successor, the entirely new and substantially heavier R107 350 SL. Over the years, the W 113 evolved from a sports car into a comfortable grand tourer, and US models were by then usually equipped with the 4-speed automatic transmission and air conditioning. Manual transmission models came with the standard 4-speed or the optional ZF 5-speed, which was ordered for only 882 cars and thus today is a highly sought-after original option. In Europe, manual transmissions without air conditioning were still the predominant choice. Of the 23,885 280 SLs produced, more than half were sold in the US.The main change was an upgrade to the 2,778 cc (2.8 L) M130 engine with 170 hp maximum power and 180 lb ft maximum torque, which finally gave the W 113 adequate power. The performance improvement was achieved by increasing bore by 4.5 mm (0.2 in), which stretched the limits of the M180 block, and required pair wise cylinder casts without cooling water passages. This mandated an oil-cooler, which was fitted vertically next to the radiator. Each engine was now bench-tested for two hours prior to being fitted, so the power specification was guaranteed at last. The last year of production was 1971 with only 830 280SL's being produced. This being a 4 speed model, the car is even more rare and desirable. With only 62,000 original miles, the car is a fabulous driving classic Mercedes convertible that would be a perfect addition to any collection. The red paint on the car looks great and has been resprayed in the past. There are no major imperfections to be found on the car, just some minor scratches and dings. The front and rear bumpers are in very good condition with only a few minor imperfections to be found. All stainless trim looks great with no damage or missing pieces. The soft top goes up and down with no issues and appears to be new. This is a two top car with the hardtop in great condition with no damage. Inside, seats look great and show no notable wear. The carpets are equally as nice as are the door panels, padded dash and headliner for the hardtop. The carpet has been replaced and looks great. All of the wood is solid inside and the original steering wheel has been replaced with a wood Nardi wheel that looks great. All of the gauges are in good working order. This is an A/C car. Under the hood, the engine compartment is very clean and shows no signs of damage. The motor has been very nicely detailed. With a turn of the key, the car starts up with no problems. Going down the road the car drives very straight and is a pleasure to drive. VIN number is 11304410020130 and the current mileage shows 62,627. The car is being sold on a clean New Jersey title.
