Description

By 1953 the Buick Roadmaster straight eight was 16 years old and had become seriously dated. All of Roadmaster's major competitors had shifted to short-stroke V-8 engines and if Buick wanted to continue to be the paragon of longer, lower and wider, it needed one of its own. The new engine was ready in time for 1953, Buick's Golden Anniversary year. Although the Nailhead was nearly identical in displacement to the straight eight Fireball it was 13.5 inches shorter, four inches lower, and 180 pounds lighter But with 188 horsepower, it was 11 percent more powerful. The compression ratio increased from 7.50:1 to 8.50:1 and torque increased from 280 to 300 pound-feet. With its new engine, the 1953 Roadmaster proved to be the first Buick with a top speed of over 100 mph since the prewar days. The compact dimensions of the V-8 engine enabled Buick to reduce Roadmaster's wheelbase by 4.75 inches across the line, although styling differences behind the engine cowl, apart from new V-8 emblem hubcaps, were largely nonexistent. Buick also introduced a new "Twin-Turbine" Dynaflow as a companion for the V-8 engine. Estimated to increase torque at the wheels by 10 percent, the new transmission provided faster and quieter acceleration at reduced engine speeds. Both power steering and power brakes were made standard. The car you see here is a true 1953 Buick Roadmaster Riviera that comes finished in its original colors of Carsbad Black with black and red interior. This is an extremely clean Roadmaster that drives as good as it looks. The paint on the car is in very good condition with no major imperfections. The car was painted around 10 years ago and retains a great shine today with only a few minor scratches and dings showing. The front and rear bumpers look great and have a great shine as does all of the bright work. There are some minor dings to the trim but it appears that it's all original for the car. Inside, the interior is all new and finished in its original colors of red and black and looks great. The carpet, door panels and seats are all new and look great. Lights, blinkers and horn all work as they should but the AM radio is only emitting static. Under the hood, the nail head V8 runs great and is incredibly smooth. The motor has been freshly painted and looks great. No damage to be found anywhere under the hood. Connected to the rare automatic transmission, the car drives down the road with no problems and shifts as it should. We do have the air ducts under the hood on order and will be on the car when sold.In the trunk you will find a full size spare and jack as well as what appears to be the original trunk lining. VIN number is 16917370 and the mileage shows 35,030. The car is being sold on a clean Missouri title showing the previous owner has had the car for the last 6 years.
