Description

For 1948, the Clipper name no longer appeared on the Packard's; the models were now known as the Eight Series in Standard, Deluxe, Super and Custom. Within these groups, there were standard wheelbases and long wheelbases which were mostly reserved for limousines. The standard/deluxe eight-cylinder engine was an L-head unit with cast-iron block and displaced 288 cubic-inches. Horsepower measured 130. The super eight had a 356 cubic-inch eight-cylinder engine and it produced 145 horsepower. The most powerful engine in the Packard lineup for 1948 was the Custom Eight L-head engine which had a 356 cubic-inch displacement and 160 horsepower. The Custom Eight was Packard's luxury line which required this powerful engine to carry its rather large and luxurious body. The rear wheels were given standard fender skirts, giving the car a clean and graceful line from front to rear. The front had an egg crate-style grille insert design with a vertical cormorant or pelican mascot adorning the front of the hood. The price range in this category began at $3700 and escalated to nearly $4900 for the 4-door Limousine. The car you see here is a 1948 Packard Deluxe Super Eight Long WB Sedan. Often called a Packard limo, the large sedan came without a partition behind the front seat. This car is a 3 owner vehicle with what is said to be 67,844 original miles. Since 1997, the car has had around 10,000 miles put on it. We have receipts for $4,688.93 for repairs and replacement parts that were done 2/3/97. New brakes and overdrive were installed in 2011 at a cost of $1,064.66. All repair bills since 1987 come with the car. The paint on the car is older but in overall good condition with no major imperfections. There are some spots where the paint is checking a bit. The car was recently buffed out and has a great shine and luster. All of the bright work looks good as well as the front and rear bumpers. There is some minor pitting and scratches showing but nothing are major. Inside, the interior looks incredible. Both front and rear seats are in great condition with no major wear to be found. There are jump seats in the rear that both look great. All of the wood in the car looks great with no cracking or major wear. All of the gauges are in good working order as well as the lights and directional's. The only things that don't work on the car are the radio and clock. Both of which are not uncommon. Under the hood, the huge 356 Cu In inline 8 cylinder runs extremely smooth. If you've never driven one of these Packards before, they are one of the smoothest, quietest running cars you will ever have the pleasure of driving. Connected to the three speed manual transmission, the car shifts as it should and the clutch is strong. This is an overdrive transmission that works as it should. The engine compartment has been nicely detailed and shows nearly as good as it did when it was new. The steel wheels are wrapped with wide white bias ply tires that have good tread life left on them. All four Packard wheel covers are in very good condition. In the trunk you will find a full size spare and jack as well as spare parts, 5 shop manuals and an operating manual. VIN number is 22712038 and the current mileage shows 67,844 which is said to be original for the car.
