Description

Ford produced the Skyliner Retractable Convertible for three years - 1957, 1958, and 1959. It was the most expensive vehicle offered by Ford. The 1958 Skyliner sold for $3,163 while the standard convertible sold for $2,650 and the send went for $2,055. A total of 14,713 units were produced in 1958. The 4,609-pound car is powered by a 300-horsepower 352 cubic inch, V-8. The Ford retractable roof was originally developed for the limited-production Continental Mark II. With the price of the Mark II already so high, Ford decided against adding the retractable roof feature, as it would further inflate the price of a car that was already outlandishly expensive for its time. With an estimated $2 million already invested towards its development, Ford decided to apply the expensive new technology to their more affordable Fairlane model, giving birth to the 'Skyliner.' The promise of higher-volume production did a better job of amortizing the costs, and improved feasibility. In 1958, the front bumper and grille was redesigned. Quad headlamps were used in the front and rear of the vehicle, replacing the previous single headlamp design. Other exterior changes included updates to the side and top of the vehicle. A new 'big Block', 332/352 cubic-inch V8 replaced the 292 and 312 cubic-inch V8's.The car you see here is finished in its correct color combination of Colonial White with correct White/Red interior. With its 332 Cu In V8 and three speed manual transmission, the car is a joy to drive. The car has benefited from a frame up restoration which included the refurbishment of the optional Magic Air heater and defroster, new full wheel covers, Master Guide power steering, new clock and radio, new electrical system and new actuating jacks for the retractable hard top. All of the bright work, stainless steel, emblems and gauges were also refurbished at the time of the restoration. The paint on the car is in wonderful condition and is finished in the original color of Colonial White. The car shows no notable imperfections. The chrome bumpers are in great condition along with the stainless trim and bright work. All of the emblems are new or refurbished as well. The power hardtop works perfectly with no issues going up or down. Inside, the seats have been reupholstered in the original colors or white and red. The carpet, headliner, door panels and dash are all new as well and look great. Steering wheel is solid with no major cracking as are all of the knobs. Gauges are all in good working order as well as the AM radio, lights, blinkers, horn and wipers. Under the hood, the 332 Cu In V8 runs great and starts up with no issues. The three speed manual transmission shifts with no problems and makes the car a joy to drive down the road. Going back to the 3.70 rear axle, the car has no problems keeping up with modern traffic on the highway. The engine compartment is very clean and shows no signs of damage. The steel wheels are covered by correct full wheel covers and wrapped with white wall bias ply tires that look new. The miles currently show 1,615 and is believed to be since the restoration. VIN number is G8RW1U9337.
