The 1968 Chevelle got an all-new distinctly sculpted body with tapered front fenders and a rounded beltline. The car adopted a long-hood/short-deck profile with a high rear-quarter "kick-up". While all 1967 Chevelle models rode a 115-inch wheelbase, the 1968 coupes and convertibles now rode a sporty 112-inch wheelbase. The Super Sport SS396 sport coupe, convertible, and El Camino pickup became a series on its own. Chevrolet produced 60,499 SS 396 sport coupes and 2,286 convertibles. The SS 396 sport coupe started at $2,899 - or $236 more than a comparable Malibu with its 307-cubic-inch V8. Under the hood, the car comes with the monster big block 396 Cu In V8 that is connected to a four speed manual transmission. With power steering and power brakes, the car is a blast to drive. The paint on the car is an older respray but is still in very good condition overall. There are a few minor scratches and dings to the body but overall very solid. The black vinyl roof shows no tears or bubbling under the vinyl. Both front and rear bumpers are in good condition and appear to be original for the car. They both retain a good luster and show only minor scratches and pitting. Inside, the seats have been recovered as well as the door panels. There has been new carpet installed along with a new headliner as well. All of which are in great condition. This is a bucket seat, console car. The dash looks great and all gauges are in good working order with the exception of the clock. The original AM radio works with no issues along with the aftermarket tachometer. Under the hood the big block 396 runs great and is connected to the four speed manual transmission. The motor starts with no issues and runs down the road great. Clutch is strong with no chatter. The engine compartment is very clean with no signs of rot or previous damage. The trunk is equally as nice with no rot or damage.
