Description

The 1961 Chevrolet Bel Air and 1961 Chevrolet Biscayne clearly showed the influence of Bill Mitchell, who had headed GM styling since 1959. Though far from compact, the totally redesigned Chevrolets were a tad shorter and narrower, but roomier than ever with their widened door openings. They were called "parkable" by Chevrolet. The freshly sloped A-pillars nearly eliminated the annoying "dogleg" below the windshield. Final vestiges of tailfins finally disappeared as well. The '61s were also claimed to have "the most quiet, vibration-dampened, relaxing ride you've ever tried," assisted in that quest by the rugged X-built Safety-Girder frame. An easy-to-reach instrument console placed everything, including the glove box, ahead of the driver. Seats were higher, but trunk sills sat lower, extending full width for easier luggage loading. Model-year output totaled 330,000 Bel Airs, 201,000 Biscayne's, and 168,900 wagons. The car you see here is the ultimate Biscayne. Painted tuxedo black with gray interior, 409 cubic inches under the hood and a four speed manual to put the power down with, you will not find a much more intimidating sedan. This car has benefitted from a thorough restoration and has been fitted with a 1963 425 horsepower, dual 4bbl 409 with a 4 speed transmission. The car is a beast on the road or the strip. Outside, the paint on the car is in wonderful condition with only a few minor blemishes from age. The black has a very good shine to it and was applied to a very straight and solid body. Both front and rear bumpers are in great condition with no pitting or notable damage showing to either. The previous owner who restored the car placed correct emblems on the fenders and trunk which was a nice touch. Inside, the dash is original for the car and does show some wear as you can see in the photos. The carpet, door panels, seats and headliner all look great and are new. The seats are covered in original style vinyl with cloth that shows no imperfections. There has been an aftermarket gauge cluster installed under the dash that shows oil pressure and water temperature. There has also been a Sunpro tach installed on the steering wheel. All work with no problems. Under the hood, the '63 409/425 horsepower V8 runs great. With a turn of the key the big block comes to life and is very streetable. We recently took the car to a car show and the car was very drivable on the street unlike many big horsepower cars. This is a dual 4bbl motor with casting number on the back of the block of 3830814. The clutch is strong with no chatter and the 4 speed manual transmission shifts with no problems with the Hurst shifter. The trunk is solid and finished with original style lining and includes a full size spare and jack. The underside is solid and shows no rot that we have found. There has been a new 3 inch stainless exhaust system installed as well as new shocks in the rear. VIN number is 11111B180856 and the current mileage shows 49,477.
