Description

The Pontiac line for '47 was a complete carry-over of the models that Pontiac had in production by the end of the '46 model year. The major automobile manufacturers were struggling with labor unrest and materials shortages, while trying to satisfy the demand for new cars that was caused by the lack of civilian automobile production due to World War II. Pontiac continued with the Torpedo and Streamliner designations. The short wheelbase Torpedo, Series 25 or 27 depending upon the use of the six or eight cylinder engine; offered a Business Coupe, Sport Coupe, Sedan Coupe, Convertible Coupe, plus 2 and 4 door Sedans. Pontiac designers revised the front-end styling slightly for 1947, the grille consisting of 4 rounded horizontal bars while the parking lamps remained within the grille just below the headlights. The Pontiac name and a highly stylized Indianhead adorned the top of the grille; the famous Silver Streaks began just above, with 5 bright lines running along the centerline of the hood to the base of the windshield. There was no engine identification on the grille or the hood side trim; nor was there any difference in the hood ornament to distinguish which engine was used. This broke a long-standing tradition at Pontiac, in years' past, the eight cylinder models were always identified by a unique hood ornament and/or by the number "8" or lettering to denote the fact the car had an eight cylinder engine under the hood. This particular six cylinder torpedo convertible is a nice driving example of a rare Pontiac from 1947. While not many are on the road, this car has benefitted from an older restoration that still shows rather well today. While the car is not perfect, we've tried to show you as many of its short comings as we could. The paint is in good overall condition with a nice shine but does have some spots of touch up and dings showing. The front and rear bumpers are in good condition with no major imperfections. The same goes for the trim pieces and grill. The power soft top does work want to function but currently needs fluid.Inside, the interior has been completely reupholstered and shows well overall with new carpet and newer seats. There are some snaps missing on the seats and door panels but no rips or tears overall. The steering wheel does show some cracking and deterioration under the cover. All gauges appear to be working with no problems as well as the spotlight. Under the hood, the six cylinder runs great and starts with no problems. The motor is nicely finished in its original color and style and retains its original six volt system. The car starts with no pumping of the gas and runs down the road very well with no smoking. The car seems to be very mechanically sound. We have recently replaced the master cylinder on the car. There is some rot under the car as you can see in the photos. It appears it's just to the floors and not to the frame. The trunk is solid and includes a full size spare. This is a very nice base car for a restoration or simply a fun toy to drive as it is. Mileage currently reads 66,311 and the VIN number is P6MA26670.
