Description

The Fairlane name was moved to Ford's new intermediate line, introduced for the 1962 model year to bridge the gap between the compact Ford Falcon and the full-size Galaxie, making it a competitor for GM's A-body 'senior compacts'. Like the Falcon, the Fairlane had a unibody frame, but the body incorporated an unusual feature Ford dubbed 'torque boxes,' four boxed structures in the lower body structure designed to absorb road shock by moving slightly in the vertical plane. Suspension was a conventional short-long arm independent arrangement in front, with Hotchkiss drive in the rear. The Fairlane was initially offered only in two-door or four-door sedan body styles. The 1964 and 1965 Fairlane ranges consisted of similar body styles: base Fairlane and Fairlane 500 two-door coupes and four-door sedans, Fairlane 500 and Sports Coupe two-door hardtops. The Challenger 289 CID engine was introduced in mid-1963, with solid lifters and other performance pieces helping the engine produce an advertised 271 hp however, it was equipped with single exhaust like the less powerful engines. This engine was coded "K" in the Vehicle Identification Number. Exterior identification was by fender-mounted "V" badges that read "289 High Performance". The "K-code" 271-horsepower 289 V8 continued into 1964 gaining dual exhausts. These "K" code cars always demand a premium and are getting increasingly hard to find. This particular 1964 Fairlane Sports Coupe has been with the same owner for the last 25+ years and is an original "K" code car. The car has gone through a cosmetic restoration a number of years ago and is still in remarkable, near original condition. Showing 92,181 original miles, the car still retains its original colors of Rangoon Red with a black vinyl interior. The paint on the car is in great condition with no major imperfections to speak of. The body is very solid with no rot or bubbling that we have seen. Both front and rear chrome bumpers have been rechromed and are in near show quality condition with no damage. All trim pieces and bright work around the car are in very good, original condition. Inside, the reupholstered black buckets seats look great in the front and the bench seat in the rear is equally as nice. The carpet looks good as does the headliner, door panels and dash. There has been an aftermarket AM/FM radio installed that works with no problems. There has also been an aftermarket gauge cluster installed that includes AutoMeter gauges for oil pressure and temperature. The Aftermarket tach also works with no problems. Under the hood, you will find the rare 289 Cu In / 271 horsepower V8 that is connected to a four speed manual transmission. The car starts up with a turn of the key and is rocket on the road. These cars are a blast to drive with their big horsepower small blocks. The engine is nicely detailed and in very original condition. The car appears to retain the original Holley 4bbl carb. In 2008 the mechanicals of this car were gone through at a cost of nearly $10,000. During this time, the 4 speed transmission was rebuilt, all brakes were replaced or rebuilt, gas tank was cleaned, new exhaust system was installed as well as countless miscellaneous items repaired or replaced. The underside of the car is very solid with no rot that we have seen. The same goes for the trunk which retains its original style matting, spare and jack. The mileage currently shows 92,181 and the VIN number is 4F47K143001.
