Description

The Pembleton is a design theme from the 1920-30's British open-wheeled race cars. Rarely seen in the world, must less in the United States, these cars are built from hand crafted aluminum around a space age chassis. Most commonly using a Citroen 2CV donor car for the mechanicals and suspension, there is only one known Pembleton Brooklands in the United States... and you are looking at it. The story with the car started when the builder retired in 1996 and was able to pursue his hobby of restoring and repairing small aircraft, pipers, cessnas and anything in between. He had built a home-built biplane and restored three Piper Cubs and altogether had owned seven or eight aircraft. The last aircraft he purchased for restoration was a light-sport aircraft that was powered by a Citroen 2CV engine converted for aviation use. The engine was too heavy for safe use in the airplane so he removed the Citroen engine and replaced it with a lighter engine. When his aviation hobby came to an end because of medical issues, he sold the last aircraft and found himself with a left-over Citroen 2CV engine. While searching the internet for what to do with such an engine he discovered the Pembleton Motor Company and was love at first sight. Here was a car that used the engine that I had and was built much like the airplanes that had been his hobby -a space frame and riveted aluminum sheets. He really wanted to build a Pembleton. But, how do you go about acquiring whatever it takes to build a British kit car using a no longer manufactured French donor car that was never successfully imported to the US? He knew he could buy the kit from the Pembleton Motor Company but he still had to get a Citroen 2CV donor car. The first place to look for something like that is Ebay. He got lucky...Very lucky. If you look for a 2CV in the US on Ebay more than likely you will only find restored cars and there was no way that will do as a donor car. But, when he first looked on Ebay Motors, US, there it was! A rough 1978 Citroen 2CV and it was located near Tampa, Florida, only about 150 miles away from where he lived. It was a modified 2CV special. The body had been cut off behind the front seat and another front body had been welded to the rear so you couldn't tell if it was coming or going! He bought the push -pull car and brought it home to South Daytona. Oddly enough, almost all the parts I needed from the donor car were still there but the car had to be completely disassembled, bead-blasted or cleaned and painted. While the cleaning was being done the kit from the Pembleton Motor Company in Kidderminster, England was ordered. To make a long story short the build took just under a year and what you see today is the final product. The motor, gearbox, steering and suspension components are from a 1978 Citroen 2CV donor car that have been mounted to the Pembleton Brooklands kit. Those components are mounted to an all steel welded lightweight space frame. The body is aluminum panels riveted and bonded to the frame. The wheels are 48 spoke 4" x 15" wire wheels such as found on MGAs and TR3s. This is a Florida car which was built in 2010. It has a clear Florida title as a 1978 Citroen 2CV and has been licensed, insured and can be driven on all public roads. This car is very unique in that it is the only one like it in the Americas presently on the road. It is a very uncomplicated, simple to drive and simple to maintain car. Citroen 2CV parts are available in the US or Europe from many European parts suppliers. The Citroen 2CV motor is very reliable and economical. The right hand drive steering and pedals make this car a real head turner and a blast to drive on the road. The car starts with a turn of the key and has good acceleration due to the fact the car weighs only 900 lbs! There is a tonneau cover included in the sale. VIN number is 44KA9799 and the current mileage shows just under 900 miles which is what is on the car since the build.
