Description

The GT Hawk's styling was a fairly radical facelift by designer Brooks Stevens of the older Hawk shape; Stevens went after a European-inspired, clean look for the car he codenamed the "Hawk Monaco" (his prototype even had Monegasque license plates). The hood from the older Hawk was retained, but was given a more pronounced radiator frame to more closely resemble the cars of Mercedes-Benz, which at the time were distributed by Studebaker. The grille inside the radiator frame was patterned after the Mercedes as well.Despite the European influence, the Gran Turismo Hawk drew on American influences, too; the roofline was heavily inspired by the Ford Thunderbird, with thick C-pillars. A chrome edge running from front to rear highlighted the top of the bodywork in very similar fashion to that on the contemporary Lincoln Continental. The taillights were particularly fashioned after the Lincoln's, and the trunk lid was given a faux bright work "grille" overlay (to hide the grooves of the otherwise carryover 1956-61 lid) that resembled the Lincoln as well.Stevens' extensive yet inexpensive modifications to the body finally rid the car of the 1950s-style tailfins and body side trim of previous models. The rear window was nearly flat and recessed, reducing the cost of an ordinarily expensive piece of glass. Overall, the exterior look kept the smooth, aerodynamic style of previous Studebakers but moved up to date. This particular 1962 Studebaker Grand Turismo has been refinished in its original colors of Metallic Green over the correct vinyl green interior. The paint is in great condition with no major imperfections to speak of. The chrome has been re done to show quality standards as well as all the accents on the vehicle. The interior is in great shape with minimal wear to be found. The seats are in good condition as well as the carpets, dash and door panels. The speedometer and tachometer have been changed out to more reliable Auto Meter gauges.Under the hood, you will find the famous 289 Cu In V8. Connected to a 4 speed manual transmission, the car is a joy to drive. This car has been completely sorted out mechanically and shows when you get behind the wheel. Turn the key and the car starts up with no issues. The motor has gone through a complete rebuild as well as the suspension. The list of repairs include: New Exhaust system, rebuilt rear springs and bushings, new front shocks, reconditioned original radiator, new hoses and belts, new water pump, rebuilt generator, rebuilt starter, new battery cables , new thermostat,, new wheel bearings, new pitman arm, Cylinder heads rebuilt to include hardened valve seats, new piston rings, new plugs, wires, cap, rotor, points, condenser, new tires, new electric fuel pump, new fuel filter, new voltage regulator, new starter solenoid, new hand brake cables, new fuel gauge sender, reconditioned fuel tank and new motor mounts.
