Description

Pontiac's intermediate line was restyled again for 1966, gaining more curvaceous styling with kicked-up rear fender lines for a "Coke-bottle" look, and a slightly "tunneled" backlight. The tail light featured a rare louvered cover, only seen on the GTO. Overall length grew only fractionally, to 206.4 inches (524 cm), still on a 115 inch (292 cm) wheelbase, while width expanded to 74.4 inches (189 cm). Rear track increased one inch (2.5 cm). Overall weight remained about the same. The GTO became a separate model series, rather than an optional performance package, with unique grille and tail lights, available as a pillared sports coupe, a hardtop sans pillars, or a convertible. Also an automotive industry first, plastic front grilles replaced the pot metal and aluminum versions seen on earlier years. New Strato bucket seats were introduced with higher and thinner seat backs and contoured cushions for added comfort and adjustable headrests were introduced as a new option. The instrument panel was redesigned and more integrated than in previous years with the ignition switch moved from the far left of the dash to the right of the steering wheel. Four pod instruments continued, and the GTO's dash was highlighted by walnut veneer trim. The car you see here is a full documented, numbers matching 1966 GTO Convertible. This is a 4 speed car with the big 389 Cu In V8 with tri-power under the hood! The car was originally ordered with a 4bbl carb which is in the trunk along with the original intake. This is included with the vehicle. Finished in the correct colors of Ivory with black soft top and black vinyl interior, the car looks great. The paint on the car is nearly spotless with no major imperfections. The power soft top goes up and down with no issues and is newer. The back window is glass with no scratches. The body of the car is very solid and shows that the previous owner who had the car in Texas purchased it out of Beverly Hills California. Both front and rear bumpers are in excellent condition with no scratching or pitting. Inside, the seats, door panels, carpet and dash are all in great condition with no notable wear. The interior is finished in the original color of black with optional center console, seat belts and remote mirrors. There has also been an aftermarket gauge package installed under the dash which includes oil pressure, temperature and volts. All work with no problems. Under the hood, the 389 Cu In V8 runs great. There is a tri-power set up currently installed but we do have the original 4bbl carb and intake that is included with the car. The 4 speed manual transmission shifts with no problems or grinding between any gears. There has been a new clutch installed less than 100 miles ago. During the restoration there were new coil springs, sway bar bushings, shocks, control arm bushings and steering link installed as well as the radiator being cleaned, a rebuild of the carbs, new control arm bushings, coil springs and sway bars. With all of this installed, the car drives better then new. In the trunk there has been new carpeting installed and it includes a full size spare and jack. All four radial tires are newer and are wrapped around the original GTO wheels. We have full PHS documentation with the car along with manuals, window sticker and a folder full of receipts and manuals. VIN number is 242676Z121246 and the current mileage shows 98,529. The car is being sold on a clean Texas title showing that the previous owner had it in Beverly Hills California.
