Description

For 1971, the Cougar was restyled, weighed less and had only a one-inch-longer wheelbase than its predecessors (112 vs. 111 - which was similar to GM's intermediate-sized two-door models such as the Olds Cutlass). The front end now featured four exposed headlights; the disappearing headlights were eliminated. The center grille piece was now larger. The rear featured a semi-fastback with a "flying buttress" sail-panel. The convertible returned, as did the XR-7 and the GT package. The Eliminator package was eliminated, but the Ram Air option remained. The engine lineup was revised for 1971 as well. Now only three engines were offered-the standard 240 hp 351 Windsor 2-barrel V8, the 285 hp 351 Cleveland 4-barrel V8 and the 370 hp 429 Super Cobra Jet 4-barrel V8.The '71 Cougar XR-7 you see today is a 62,743 original mile car that is finished in the original color combination of Platinum with white interior. This platinum color is a very light pastel blue that looks great in person and is a rarely seen color. The paint looks very good and shows no major spots of imperfections, just a few minor spots of touch up. The power white convertible top is equally as nice with no staining, rips or tears to the vinyl. The rear window is glass. Inside, the white vinyl/leather interior is the original for the car and in great condition. The carpet appears to have been replaced recently and is in great condition. The dash, door panels, arm rest and wood grain trim are all equally as nice with on major wear showing. All gauges are in good working order along with the rim blow steering wheel, lights, blinkers and wipers. The A/C is in good working order and blows ice cold. The sequential tail lamps also work with no problems. Under the hood, the 351 Cu In V8 runs great and starts with a turn of the key. The motor is said to be the original for the car and still retains its original 2bbl carb, power steering, power disc brakes and ice cold A/C. The engine is nicely detailed and very original. No damage to be found. The motor is connected to the three speed automatic transmission which shifts and performs with no problems. Under the car is very solid with no rot that we have seen. It appears to be all original metal under this original southern car. The mileage currently shows 62,743 miles which is said to be original for the car. The VIN number is 1F94H526371.
