Description

Pontiac celebrated its Silver Anniversary in 1951; it had been 25 years since the first car rolled out of the Oakland factory in Pontiac Michigan. The Chieftain line essentially carried over from 1950, although the Catalina was now available in "Deluxe" trim as well as the exclusive "Super Deluxe" package. The predominantly horizontal grille-work of '49 and '50 was pleasantly updated with a gull-wing motif for '51. An Indian head medallion featured prominently in the center of the grille opening, while the Pontiac name-plate was incorporated into the top arched grille bar attached to the hood. Pontiac's famous Silver Streaks still adorned the center of the hood, rising from the front name-plate, up and back to the base of the windshield and then continuing on the deck lid to meet the rear name-plate and trunk handle. The standard hood ornament was a chrome-plated Indian brave; the deluxe ornament was fitted with a translucent amber Indian head insert and illuminated whenever the parking or headlamps were lit. There were 8 distinct body styles available in 1951. The Chieftain line got the Business / Sedan coupe; 2 and 4 door sedans; the hardtop coupe and the convertible. The body side molding for the deluxe models ran from behind the front wheel to the back of the rear fender, and was quite literally styled as an Indian spear, the head of which featured 3 stars. All deluxe models carried the Pontiac name in chrome script on the front doors just above the sweep-spear, and those with 8 cylinder engines included script lettering Eight as well. This particular car has never been through any kind of major restoration in its 60 years. The only things that appear to have been done to the car is a older paint job and new carpet. The odometer shows 55,815 miles that may be original for the car. We have no documentation to prove this but it sure looks the part. This is the optioned "Hydra-matic Drive" automatic transmission mated with the inline 8 cylinder which is a rare option for the car. Outside, the paint is an older respray in Yorkshire Grey with Ivory top. The paint is showing its age with nicks and some checking in the paint. Overall it looks good, but it's not perfect. The front and rear bumpers are both in excellent condition with no major pitting or damage. The same goes for the trim around the car. Other options to the exterior include fender skirts, side view mirror and sun visor. The body is very solid with no rot that we have found. Inside, the interior appears to be the original for the car with the exception of the carpet. The seats are in overall good condition with some staining and some wear. Nothing unexpected or abnormal considering the age. The same goes for the dash which is in overall good condition but is showing its age for being all original. Gauges are in good condition and all appear to be in good working order. The car does have the optional electric clock and AM radio. Under the hood, the inline 8 cylinder runs great. Connected to the Hydra-matic automatic transmission, the car is a joy to drive. The engine starts with no problems with a push of the button. The engine is nicely detailed and very clean. The red wheels are covered with chrome beauty rings and Pontiac hubcaps. The bias ply tires are in good condition with only some minor wear showing. This is a highly optioned, very original car that is rarely seen. Whether you want to keep it as it is and drive it or put it through a full restoration, this car is sure to please. With 55,815 miles showing, the car has tons of life left in it. VIN number is L8UH12696 and the car is being sold on a clean Missouri title.
