Description

1956 was the last year for the knobby, P-38 inspired tail fins on the rear of most Cadillac's, including the $4,587 Sixty Special. While the Cadillac division broke records by surpassing 150,000 units, Sixty Special slipped down to an even 17,000 models this year. Revamped trim included Cadillac crests on the front fenders, and a new grille (with a finer egg crate design from last year) bearing a Cadillac script emblem, mounted at an angle, on the driver's side. Rear fenders held a chrome bead running along the top, while massive chrome spears with hash marks replaced the 1955's delicate chrome louvers on the rear sides. This chrome side trim morphed into the oval exhaust ports in the redesigned rear bumper. A anodized gold grille was optionally available on Sixty Special, while power brakes became standard equipment. New for '56 was a larger 365 cu in (5.98 L) power plant producing 285 horsepower (213 kW) combined with a revamped automatic transmission. Sabre Spoke wheels - standard on Eldorado - became available for Sixty Special, while inside, passenger seatbelts appeared on the option list. The car you see here is a rarely seen Series 60 Fleetwood Sedan that has benefited from a very nice older restoration. Originally purchased from the Olin Nix Motor Company in Lamesa Texas on December 10, 1955, the car was sold to the West Texas Explosives Company. In Texas for many years, the car then went to Colorado where it stayed for nearly 20 years. This car is fully optioned with accessories that include EZ eye glass, heater, A/C with roof ducts, 6 way power seat and power windows.Outside, the paint on the car is in great condition with no major imperfections. The front and rear bumpers both look great with no damage showing to either, just some minor pitting. All of the glass is in very good condition with only some minor delaminating showing around the edges. The body is very straight with no bubbling or rot that we have seen to the body and shows that it has been in the south for the majority of its life. Inside, the car is in very good condition overall and has been reupholstered in the past. The steering wheel does show some cracking but appears to be original for the car. The gray with blue seats look good but are older. They are power and work with no problems. The windows are also power and all work with no problems. Gauges, lights, blinkers are all in good working order as well as the vacuum wipers. There have been seat belts installed. Under the hood, the 365 Cu In V8 runs great and is very nicely detailed. This is the correct engine for the car with VIN number stamped on the front pad. The engine bay is nicely painted to match the rest of the car and shows no damage. With a turn of the key, the car starts up with no hesitation and goes down the road with no problems. Connected to the 3 speed automatic transmission, this big Caddy is a joy to drive. The underside has zero undercoating so there is nothing to hide. There is a very small bit of rust to the floors but no holes and overall very solid. The car currently shows 129,769 which is believed to be actual for the car. VIN number is 5660023592 and is being sold on a clean Iowa title.
