Description

The Dodge Brothers Company was 14 years old when it was bought by Walter Chrysler in 1928. As a new division of his corporation, Dodge built 125,000 cars in 1929. Then the Depression turned the nation's economy from sunny to gloomy. Though most makes bottomed out in 1933-34, Dodge averaged a healthy 100,000 cars a year, good for fourth behind Chevrolet, Ford, and sister-make Plymouth. Dodge changed rungs on the Chrysler price ladder in the early 1930s, sometimes standing above DeSoto, sometimes below. By 1933 it was decided that Dodge should occupy the attractive spot just above Plymouth and below DeSoto. The Dodge Brothers (who both died in 1920) and their successors sold only four-cylinder cars through 1928, then announced their first six: 241.5-cubic inch L-head unit making 58-68 horsepower. Dodge then offered nothing but inline-sixes through 1952.This particular '31 Dodge Series DD is an outstanding pre war classic that is loaded with period features such as dual sidemounts, rear luggage trunk and sun visor. With the unique color combination of brown and white with yellow wire wheels, the car is striking. The paint on the car is in great condition with no notable imperfections. Both front and rear bumpers are in great condition as well with no damage. The rear trunk looks great as well as the dual sidemounts. The rumble seat works as it should. Inside, the seat is nicely upholstered in period correct cloth along with the headliner, door panels and carpet. The steering wheel is solid with no cracking. The gauges in the center work with no problems and do appear to be original for the car. There has been an aftermarket Stuart Warner temperature gauge added. Under the hood the inline 6 cylinder runs great and starts right up with a push of the button. The motor is nicely detailed in the original style and colors. The engine bay has been painted to match the exterior. The three speed manual transmission shifts as it should and the clutch is strong. The motor was is fed through a single barrel Carter carburetor. The underside of the car is very solid with no rot that we have seen. This is a great driving classic that is rarely seen. You'll see the Chevrolet's and defiantly the Model A's but rarely, if ever, a '31 Dodge. The current mileage shows 05,376. The VIN number is U60585 and the car is being sold on a clean Texas title.
