Description

The original Toronado began as a design painting by Oldsmobile stylist David North in 1962. His design, dubbed the "Flame Red Car," was for a compact sports/personal car never intended for production. A few weeks after the design was finished, however, Oldsmobile division was informed it would be permitted to build a personal car in the Riviera/Thunderbird class for the 1966 model year, and North's design was selected. Oldsmobile spent seven years developing the Toronado. Prior to its introduction to the public, over 1.5 million brutal test miles had been performed to verify the strength and reliability of the Toronado's front-drive components. Obviously, Oldsmobile did not want anyone to experience problems with the new design. History has confirmed the Toronado design was indeed heavily over-built; the GMC motor home of the 1970s, which used a basically unchanged Toronado-derived drivetrain, stands as a testament to that fact. Nevertheless, the re-introduction of front wheel drive earned the new Toronado Motor Trend "Car of the Year" honors in 1966. This 1966 Toronado is an original Colorado car that is currently showing only 60,000 original miles. The car spent most of its life in Colorado before going to Kansas in 1986, where it has been since. The car has benefited from new brakes, wheel cylinders, master cylinder, a rebuilt carb, new tires, new exhaust and new tires all around. All of this makes it ready for the road! The car is finished in the original shade of Ocean Mist and is in very good condition. There are no major scratches or dings, just a few very small imperfections from age. Both front and rear bumpers look good with no damage or major pitting. The body is very solid on the car with no bubbling or rot. Inside, the original black vinyl seats are in great condition with no rips or tears. The same goes for the carpet, dash, door panels and arm rests. There is some wear to the carpets from age. All power windows are in good working order and go up and down with no issues. All lights, gauges, blinkers, wipers and horn work with no problems. Under the hood, the big 425 Cu In V8 looks great. Connected to the front wheel drive transmission, this car is a joy to drive and has tons of power. The motor is extremely clean and looks nearly as good as it did when the car rolled off the showroom floor. All 4 tires are brand new and have no wear showing. They are wrapped around steel wheels with correct Toronado hubcaps that are all in great condition with no major curb rash showing. The mileage currently shows 60, 480 and the VIN number is 396876M539462. The car is being sold on a clean Kansas title showing the previous owner had the car since 1986.
