Description

The 1954-1956 Oldsmobile 98 and Super 88 were arguably the best combinations of styling, performance, engineering, and craftsmanship seen from Lansing since WWII. Starting in 1954, they boasted all-new X-member frames with longer wheel-bases (longest on 98s), bigger-bore "Rocket" V-8s with more power, and colorful new square-shouldered styling marked by GM's trendy "Panoramic" wraparound windshield. Enthusiastic public response boosted Olds from sixth to fifth in industry production, then to fourth for their banner year of 1955. All models were nicely face lifted flaunting splashy two-toning and hardtop sedans arrived at mid-season, along with companion Buicks. The '56s received another restyle (announced by a gaping "mouth" grille) and even more power. The Super 88 remained the "performance" line, sharing its higher-power engine with the luxury top-range 98s. This particular 1959 Oldsmobile Super 88 was purchased May 14th of 2000 as a non running, all original car. Nearly $20,000 was spent restoring the car with new paint, rebuilding the engine and transmission, new chrome and many other miscellaneous parts. All of the work was documented with receipts as well as a stack of pictures showing the car before and during the restoration. Outside, the paint is in excellent condition and shows no major imperfections. The car is finished in a metallic gunmetal gray and white which looks great. All of the stainless trim and chrome on the car has been replated at a cost of over $1,500 and in excellent condition with no damage showing. Both front and rear bumpers look great with no damage. The body is very solid and can be seen in original form in the Polaroid's we have of the car before restoration. Inside, the interior is finished in black and white and looks great. There is no wear to the seats of any kind. The door panels, carpet and headliner are all equally as nice with no major wear or staining showing. There has been an under dash gauge cluster installed that includes oil pressure and water temperature that both work with no problems. The steering wheel appears to be original for the car and does show some minor cracking but is not deteriorating. Under the hood, the 324 Cu In V8 runs great and has tons of power. Connected to the original Hydramatic "Jet Away" automatic transmission, the car is a joy to drive. The engine compartment is finished like it was from the factory and looks great. The motor and transmission were both rebuilt at a cost of $3,766. The underside of the car looks great and is very solid. With only some minor undercoating which shows how solid the underside really is. The VIN number is 568W6895 and is being sold on a clean Nebraska title. The current mileage shows 106,317 and is believed to be actual for the car.
